    Unhappy AMD/ATI Graphics Card

So i recently picked up a couple of 6870's from XFX and the performance is very nice, good average FPS in most games and the scaling is pretty good compared to earlier ATI Crossfire setups. But i wanna say that after having NVIDIA cards for 5 years i am truly dissapointed by ATI's software. Constant driver crashes when streaming video or playing in fullscreen aswell as the Crossfire bugging out in various games i cant help but wonder why ATI are still selling graphics cards, theyre software is so bad that im curious what kind of moron is developing it. With the amount of money they are spending on new hardware technology and the production of more powerful cards, i dont understand why they cannot hire some competent personell to develop som proper drivers.

So with that rant i have a couple of questions.

Why are people buying these cards ?
Why is there no reviews stating how crap the drivers are?
Why isnt someone writing a big rant to ATI telling them what a crap job they are doing?
Do you think its right that we should pay 100 of $$ for something half assed that only works when it has a good day?

Because if no one complains, it isnt gone get fixed. Personally i play Starcraft 2 at a pretty high level and you have noe idea how annoying it is to get a black screen for 5 seconds in the middle of a decisive battle.

All i can read when im browsing hardware forums is how people are eagering awaiting the new release of the 6990 and how awesome its gone be, but im pretty sure new hardware isnt gone change the state of the software that ATI have you using. Right now i am actually selling my ATI cards for a 100$ loss to get 2x560Ti's instead, just because i want cards that work when i need them work.

So simply put, screw ATI/AMD i hope they go out of business in the near future because this kind of slopiness really should not be overlooked. Am i the only one feeling screwed over here?

    Thankyou

Nvidea went through the same thing in the past. Sometimes drivers need to mature but your right, in crossfire, I see more issues than Nvidea. Be patient.

Are you using the lastest 11.2 drivers? Don't have crossfire but i'm thinking in the near future to go either corossfire or SLI for Battlefield 3.

CF is the issuse with the driver, try to use with one card then the problem will go away.

No bad report from the reviewer because most of them were tested with single card only and very seldom the sponsor will send two samples to one reviewer to test unless a special request.

Well Deton, i originally was using one card and i was constantly getting a "The display drivers stopped working and has recovered" even then. And now when using Crossfire, the same problem persists but now i also get various other problems.

When playing Call of Duty Black Ops the screen will randomly freeze and i have to hard restart the computer because even "CTRL+ALT+DEL" doesnt work. When i play starcraft 2 sometimes i will get a distorted screen which look like 2 of the same screen overlapping each other with horizontal lines distorting everything.

And yes i am using the latest drivers. Basically i have to disable Crossfire everytime i want to play a game and even then its not certain to work without errors.

I feel like I have been scammed by a corporate business. When you buy an ATI graphics card it should say on the box "BEWARE: Our drivers suck and your card may not always work like it should". I do not understand how a company can get away with selling bogus stuff, especially a company on AMD/ATI's scale.

Bad overclock? Do you mean my cpu?

Its an I7-950 running @ 3.8Ghz, 200x19 @ 1.25vcore and 1.30 QPI. Have passed numerous runs of IBT and 8 hours of Prime95 blend test, havent seen temps above 75c ever. So i dont think this has anything to do with my overclock.

On top of the problems im having, a friend of mine has a 5850 from XFX which is also a Black Edition and hes has the same ****ty driver failures.

Yup, when I am unstable I lose drivers. Could be the same issue. Are the cards overclocked or at stock?

I am running 1 x 5870 and never had a problem with drivers...... I would uninstall drivers, run a driver sweep and re-install. If that doesn't work uninstall, driver sweep and use 10.9 -11.1 drivers.

yeah, I never had a problem with ATI drivers like what he's mentioning... well some BFBC2 issues but that's a poorly made console port.

I've tested and used every single AMD and Nvidia card on the market in the last 2 years. And yes, I will admit, Nvidia's drivers overall tend to be more stable. AMD has a few advantages in other areas, but not stability.

HOWEVER, I have seen that error you mention and it's not "normal". It does happen on occasion, but generally when something is wrong. I have run Crossfire on dual cards, dual GPU cards, and not had those problems in 2 years. Like I said though, I have experienced it, but it was an isolated incident and not indicative of AMD/ATI drivers overall.

So while I would agree that Nvidia's drivers are better, I think perhaps you've got something wrong which is making your situation very bad, not a "normal" situation for an AMD Crossfire setup, in fairness.

And for the record, I'm not an AMD or Nvidia fanboy. I consider myself objective after testing and using so many cards up close.

Ok Skyguy, so if i take what you just said into consideration my rant may not have been totally justified. What do you suggest i do to isolate the issue? Because the errors i mentioned dont occur when i disable Crossfire. And in Crysis i have never had a single crash, the only games its happened to me in is Starcraft 2 and Call of Duty Black Ops. If i can get this fixed then i can say i am very happy with the cards overall, so that would be awesome.

There should be AMD Catalyst Crossfire Profiles available. It is a separate download from the Catalyst drivers. It's on AMD's website, same place as the drivers though. Download and install that, it should contain profiles for many current games.

I don't play SC but definitely play CoD:BO and haven't had a problem with the CrossFire profiles. See if that helps. Sounds like it's related to the specific games themselves, not your setup.
