Default Request: Recommendations on what GPU's to get

Ok, I've been looking back thorough the reviews, and I've seen that the GTX 580 beats the HD6970 in almost every game on the market.

However, from a cost/performance consideration, what would be the better choice to go with?

I am currently using 3x 22" monitors, and would love to run games on all three monitors, preferably with bezel correction. I've not noticed bezel correction from AMD, but I know that Eyefinity is supposed to be great.

I don't play too many modern games, or at least not ones taking advantage of all of the latest DX11 technology available.

So, I guess what I'm really needing to know is what Graphics Card will allow me to play some somewhat older games (2-3 years old) at MAX settings on all 3 monitors, and can it be done from a single card?

I haven't had a GTX 560 - 580, or the anything past an HD4850X2 in my system to test and see the differences between models. Like how big of a difference does a GTX580 make over a GTX 570 at the resolutions that I will be using.

Money for performance wise if you only running older games the AMD cards would be alright from my perspective. But I still wouldnt be trying to cram high Res out of one card over 3 monitors, this will leave you resourceless with any other GFX usage... Check out the 560 ti and think about going SLI...

6970s have 2gb of RAM which will help immensely with eyefinity. However, a GTX 580 3gb blows that out of the water, lmao. But for sheer price/performance, you can get 2 2gb 6970s for a little over the price of a single 580 3gb. Also, check the Pureoverclock review for the Sapphire 6950 Toxic, apparently it can be flashed to a 6970, so that's another option.

My issue is, I've been looking at 6970s as well, but they're all gone, lmao. So I'm going for 3 3gb 580s. It's either a manufacturing issue, or the rumors about bitcoiners buying up all the damn cards is true.

If Stan doesn't have something up his sleeve, look at 2 x 6950's. That is all you need. Retail about $500.

6970 if you're doing multiple monitors, and they don't have to be the exact the same monitor specs. Even if you don't play modern games you still want to get 2Gb of mem card. More mem benefit to multi monitor.

Default Re: Request: Recommendations on what GPU's to get

I've run various compilations of Eyefinity, most current being 5x1 portrait courtesy my dual 6990s (watercooled, of course). Previously, I ran triple 6970s with Komodo WBs & played around in 3x1 Landscape & Portrait alike. With the brute force of my 2600K @ 5.2 GHz (just acquired a golden chip doing 5.49 @ 1.5v) and the nf200 controller's PW Short / Broadcast functionality combined with the massive bandwidth increase between the PCI-E lane "multiplier" (the bandwidth increase is huge for p67 mobos with limited CPU PCI-E access), I see scaling at high resolutions of 99% gpu load, almost without exception. Those exceptions usually dissolve with AMD's very frequent CAP releases. I am able to implement, thus far in every tested title, absolute maximum in-game texture/post-processing/shader/shadows/HDAO setting with 16xAF @ 6000x1920 resolution. More impressive, to me at least, is the ability to enable 2x EQAA & occasionally 4x EQAA in a very wide selection of titles. In the range of 70-75% regarding 2x EQAA.

My preference mode is 3x1, @ 3560x1920. Because we PC enthusiasts sit close proximity to our monitors, even 3x1 Landscape can force (occasionally, at least, though not always) head-turns to see details, enemies, whatever. 3x1 portrait better emulates "normal" aspect ratio screens, providing near 7 megapixel resolution real-estate without having that horizon of 5760 pixels. 5x1 portrait, while super fun to show off & shows off the processing/scaling capabilities of quadfire, feels akin to sitting inches away from a 60-inch big screen - although pixel density makes that analogy immediate nonsense, the experience nevertheless is overwhelming.

A duo or trio of 6970 or 6950s will provide a perfect, amazing Eyefinity experience.

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely have to try putting all 3 of them in portrait view just to see how it looks. Don't know if I'll keep it that way though, as I like my horizontal viewing space for coding.

Now, if Newegg will only get their act together and restock the Sapphire HD6950 Toxic cards, then I'll go with those and try to flash the BIOS over to a 6970. Considering using the SilverStone RV03 and would need the fan at the rear of the card for optimal cooling.

If you want to span across the 3 monitors in Nvidia Surround, then you will need 2 GTX 580s in SLI. It is absolutely required. AMD on the hand, one requires one card for Eyefinity. So there is a major cost difference there to consider.

Are you willing to buy 2 cards? If not, that's your answer. If so, then the 580's will give you considerably more horsepower together.

For games? I'm not so sure. You may want to xfire if you want high details. Otherwise? I'm sure you'd be fine.

My current 4850X2 is able to run the game I'm currently playing at 5040 x 1050 with everything on max, including 16x anisotropic filtering and 8xAA. However, this is DirectX9.0c with SoftTH (and crossfireX turned off), as the game only supports multiple monitors in either Eyefinity or NVidia Surround on newer hardware without that work-around.

So hopefully, considering how much faster a 6970 is than a 4850X2 without CrossfireX enabled, I should still be fine, and be able to enable full DirectX 11 graphics as well.

I've been very happy with my Sapphire HD6950 2GB on dual monitors. I think I'd add another one to run triple monitors with Eyefinity though.

Newegg has a number of them in stock. See: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ion=hd6950+2gb. My preference is one of models with dual fans as I don't have liquid cooling and the 6950 tends to run a little hot on more than one monitor. You're looking at spending around $550 for dual HD6950's for a total of 4GB compared to $750 for one GTX 590 3GB card or about $500 for one GTX 580 1.5GB card. From a price vs. performance perspective, the HD6950 is the superior choice over the Nvidia cards IMO.

Newegg also has a number of HD6970's in stock, but they are quite a bit more money (about $700 for two) and I doubt you'll need the extra performance for the games you want to run. See: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ion=hd6950+2gb. My personal favorite is the MSI R6970 Lightning. It would be sweet to have two of those, but at nearly $800 for two cards I can't justify the expense.

Hope this helps and let us know what you finally settle on.

A single 6970 for gaming on Eyefinity is a bit lightweight. You'll need to dial down the image quality settings at least. It's the least I'd go for Eyefinity.

I have never had a Shapphire Video Card but I have had many AMD cards and I have not had good luck with them. Its probably just a an isolated case where I got unlucky, so don't think I am putting down AMDs cards, especially Shapphire since I never owned one, but as for AMD based cards in general my luck has been poor. So I stick to Nvidia Cards, just one mans opinion.
