    Default Image corruption after 6600 GT installation

    Hi guys.

    This may take a while so pls bear with me.

    I bought a second hand 6600 GT off eBay t'other day and looking at the sellers description, he seemed honest enough so I bought it.

    Anyhoo, before installing it, I wiped my ATI drivers off using Drivecleaner and checked Add/Remove progs. to be sure. I disabled/uninstalled the 9700 Pro in device manager also. Shut down. Removed old card, plugged in 6600 GT. Ok no probs yet.
    Went to boot sequence and I get major image corruption, all over the screen (before, during and after POST). I manage to get into windows, still with horrible image problems; sorry guys but it's very hard to describe. I attempt to install the latest Forceware drvs, and after about half way through, windows crashes and turns monitor off. Does exactly the same in safe mode too.

    Here's what I have tried:

    1) Cleared CMOS (well, u never know)!
    2) Reset BIOS to defaults.
    3) Plugged in my trusy ole' GeF 3 and then GeF 2 (ah memories) to see if my mobo had a problem with Nvidia GPU's for what ever reason. These both worked perfectly.
    4) Desperation led me to re-install Windows, just to make sure there were no drivers lurking that would cause more problems.

    So, now I am back to square one with my 9700 Pro plugged back in and tearing my hair out trying to figure out what is wrong with this damn 6600 GT!!??

    If I was to describe what the screen corruption looks like:

    ================================================== =======
    ================================================== =======
    ================================================== =======
    ================================================== =======
    ================================================== =======
    ================================================== =======
    ================================================== =======

    ....all over the screen. And when it gets into windows, the image has a very green tint to it and mouse trails get left everywhere, with splotches all over the screen.

    I am desperate for a solution to this, unless of course the card is faulty (the guy did say that the card can be returned if found to be faulty, yet he explained it has been running flawlessly ever since hes had it). Now I've been messing with PCs since 1999, so I am experienced enough, but not enough to figure this out, so I would really really appreciate any help with this.

    I have mailed the guy I bought it off yesterday but as yet had no response. I have not posted my system spec as I figure this irrelevant, however, if you need it let me know.

    Thx in advance guys

    It sounds like the card is faulty and the same thing you're describing above has happened to me before on a dying 9800 Pro.

    There are a few things you could try just to 100% confirm it is faulty, may aswell jump right to no 2 tbh

    1) update your motherboard BIOS to the latest and see if it sorts it out.
    2) take the 6600GT to another PC just to see how it behaves in a completely different system.

    If neither of these work that card is definitely faulty, though i'm 99% sure it is already.

    Let's hop this guy from Ebay is ok about this, because it sounds like he sold it knowing it was a dud. (me jumping to conclusions)

    James,

    Thanks for that info mate. I forgot about upgrading the BIOS (as much as I hate doing it), but it's worth a shot. Guys on Kustom PC forums are pretty sure it's a duff card, and I also had a feeling the VRAM was nacked.

    I'll do the BIOS tomorrow and I'll let you know the outcome. Now I'm orf to bed because my brain hurts!

    Thx again.

    Hi guys

    K I updated mobo BIOS and d/loaded latest drvs for NForce 2 chipset - still didn't work. I even tried the card in my old set up (MSI KT3 UltraARU AMD 2000+) and it did the same.

    Good news though.

    I have since had responses from the seller as he was away over the weekend, so natch I jumped to conclusions assuming he was a dodgy seller when quite clearly he isn't. He was very helpful and apologetic and he is letting me return the card to him for a full refund. So smiles all round methinks

    After all, I am just trying to push 2k4 to its limits as I only play it at 1024, 4xAA, 2xAF at highest detail (bar player characters - normal). Sure it still looks nice, but at 1024, it (and other games) lack the crispness of running at say, 1280.

    Well, thx for all the help you have given me during this and I shall continue to browse, post, lurk in these forums!!

    Thx guys

    Elt
