    Default Is this too hot?

Does anybody think it's bad that the replacement card I got (MSI R6970 Lightning) is hitting 80C while gaming? I've googled and lots of people post that it hits 64-75C under load. I have reseated the cooler but I still get the same temps. It is working fine, just wondering is all.

For a 6970, that is about what I was getting on my 6950 before I went water cooling with it..

At the moment I have it open. I was working on cable management and was too lazy to put the case back together.

UPDATE: Now the card ends up overheating at stock clocks in CS:GO of all games. It hits 90C and above. This causes the AMD display drive to stop responding and crash the game. I can play if I set the fan to 70% and up, but that is too loud. Should I attempt to RMA my RMA?

**********I decided to try laying my case on it's side and now I can at least play without it crashing at stock. I have reseated the cooler and re-TIM'd still to no avail.

I'm going to have to wait a bit as I am broke. I cannot cover even the $10 shipping.

Have you tried turning up the fan speed, or talking to MSI's surport team ? I wouldn't set up an RMA just yet, turn the fans up to 50-60% and see if that helps.

he said he was running it at 70%. It helped but it was loud. Just its almost like the TIM dried up. Are you getting artifacts while playing or just browsing the web?

Thats what I was thinking. I dont know how it would effect his warranty. Check for warranty labels and seals over the screws. If it under warranty I would be hesitant or removing the cooler. Might be better to RMA it. Sometimes they will send you return labels. Make sure you ask them when you setup rma.

He just did an RMA and they sent him a better card than the one he sent back. To many people jump on RMA'S instead of talking to someone from support first, it's always best to have them suggest sending the product back, rather than ask for the RMA.

I agree. Any time I have called for an RMA they still go through a bunch of troubleshooting steps first and ask a bunch of questions. I didnt think he would just call and say give me an RMA and they would do it no questions ask.

Hey Criss, what are the GPU idle and underload temps showing now, are they the same or lower ? Also, which progam are you using to monitor the GPU temps, and have you turned up the fan speed yet, make sure you set it to apply at start up, if your idle temps are still high.

Indeed I would rather figure this all out than get another RMA done. I am using MSI Afterburner and GPU-Z to monitor temperatures. Today the card is running fine and at normal temps too. Odd. Idle is now 40C and Load ranges from 60C-75C depending on what I'm doing.
