LOL as far as this thread goes, it will just fade off into the sunset most likely, unless someone decides to necro post in it some months down the line x-)

As for your upgrade path, you have taken essentially the same path I mapped out for myself. You're definitely making the right choice here, and even though there won't necessarily be a HUGE performance increase that is noticeable, it will make your current platform more viable for the new video cards moving forward. After the video card, however, I would consider updating your motherboard and CPU next; it doesn't have to be immediately, since you're already going to be dropping a decent wad of cash on this, but in the coming year or so your platform will start to lag behind a bit with the upcoming and future gaming titles which rely on more CPU cores and/or more efficient cores.

For a gaming platform, the best choice to make for a solid gaming platform is the Z87 platform with an Intel Haswell i5 CPU. If you were thinking of saving a bit of cash by going AMD I would advise against that for the time being, and NOT because I dislike AMD (I am an #AMDRedTeam member); it's because AMD is in a state of change right now, and no one fully knows the future of the AM3+ socket which uses the FX processors, or how good these new Steamroller APUs are going to be on the new FM2+ socket. Like I said though, you got some time yet before that purchase, but these are the things to keep an eye out for. These forums should have lots of news postings as we find them.

Yeah I checked some stats out on your socket and i3 processor, and even the single thread performance is kind of low for an intel chip. You're not pulling much ahead of the old core 2 chips from way back in the day. I will say though, if you upgraded to an amd 970 chipset with the fx-6300 or fx-6350 processor, you'd stay in a great budget range, that hardware should keep up with most any single GPU you buy for the system short of some of the $600+ cards, you'd have some decent overclocking headroom if you decided to go down that road in the future, and single thread performance will be a reasonable boost with multicore performance nearly doubling from that i3 you currently have.

The reason why I mention it is my tv computer's mobo fried and I'll be heading this route once November hits. Keep an eye on stuff the entire month of November too. Really good sales happen all month and they definitely are the best of the year.
