Default AMD R9 290x doesn’t require CrossFire Bridge

With the official images of the AMD R9 290x online many noticed that there were no CrossFire interconnects on the board. This would either indicate that AMD’s new flagship graphics card doesn’t’ support CrossFire, or that AMD is utilizing a new technology that eliminates the need for a bridge between two cards. Luckily, the latter is the correct, as AMD revealed the 290x would be able to support CrossFire without the bridge.

I caught this earlier. On the one hand I love that someone is finally making good use of the PCI-E 3.0 standard and simultaneously getting rid of part of your rig that almost always manages to look like crud. On the OTHER hand, however, I can't help but to glance over at my mostly brand new Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 board... and notice that it has no PCI-E 3.0 on it... and good luck finding a reasonably priced Gen 3 version that is consistently in stock.

Either the plan is to get current AMD platform users to switch over to their new APU platform (FM2+), which DOES natively support the 3.0 standard and may, moving forward, support the eight cores that Mantle goes on about being able to leverage properly, or there will be a lineup-wide refresh of AM3+ which will allow for PCI-E 3.0 for current FX users.

jumping in on your xfire topic here

how do i find out whats the strongest possable match for this processor?
    Newegg.com - AMD A10-6800K Richland 4.1GHz (4.4GHz Turbo) Socket FM2 100W Quad-Core Desktop Processor - Black Edition AMD Radeon HD 8670D

specs say it is "Integrated Graphics AMD Radeon HD 8670D" but that tells me nothing at all as to what gfx card i can or cant pair it up with

Officially, it says that the HD 6670 is the strongest card you can run that chip with in dual graphics, though I have seen people having some success with the 7750 as well.

Bear in mind though: Dual Graphics works differently from CrossFire in that the graphics solutions communicate along the PCI channels. As a result there is a LOT of frame-pacing and stuttering issues associated with Dual Graphics with some titles, older ones especially. Could be because of the bandwidth limitations on PCI-E 2.0 or something, maybe even the GPU architecture or just a driver issue. This all may have been largely resolved in recent driver updates, however keep that in mind.

As far as needing graphical horsepower to go along with an APU, you really can't go wrong with the strongest card you can afford. At that point, however, the APU becomes valued less for it's integrated video, and more for the speed binning of the cores. Really all up to you at that point, you just won't be running dual graphics.
