Default Please recommend a GPU for my system :)

    Hi all,
I am upgrading my old faithful pc as far as its worth it really, i am in the middle of installing a Samsung SSD 840 500gig, and Windows 7 Pro to utilize the 24gig of Vengeance ram,
i cant afford to do a new build just yet so i want to upgrade the GPU.
I am getting into gaming again and i play Skyrim mainly, Crysis, Tombraider and the likes.
At the mo, the old XfX Radeon 6870 1gig card plays all my games pretty well but as i have 200 - 300 spare from xmas money i would like to
know what would fit my set up best without needing to upgrade PSU's etc.
I also do a lot of 3D modelling and animation whether that counts
    Thanks for any suggestions peeps
    Lee.

well with that budget, you could go for somthing like the R9 290 or the gtx 770...theyre about 250-300, at least that's what these two cards would cost where i live dont know much about 3D modelling and animation, but they should easily pull the games you mention i 1920x1080p

What is your budget? You cant afford a new build because you put it all in the 500gb SSD and 24gb of memory. lol JK JK.

If you want to spend your whole budget, you be able to get Gtx 780 (none TI) or R9 290 maybe X.

I really don't think you can go wrong. I love my 290X.

lol seriously 200 - 300 's ,I needed an SSD and W7Pro as i already had the 24gig of ram and 8gig was wasted on W7 home...so that was an essential upgrade.
I would love to max the GPU potential out of the system now.
In a year or so when i have some proper money i will build another system but till then this old rig is working well and just needs a birthday lol
Cards change all the time so advice is much needed peeps.

i've been looking at quite a few bechmarks of 290 and 290x...i don't really see why one should throw an extra 180$ after the 290x over the 290? The tests i've seen, the 290x only gives about 5-10 fps extra in most games.

different manufacturers have different prices. Performance is somewhat the same right out the box, but OC potential can be MUCH different

Cool, so this R9 290 will sit nice on my old X58 board with my 850PSU running my OC'ed rig yer ?
One last question...this R9 looks pretty top end, would my rig specs utilize such a card ?
Just wanna be sure before i splash my cash

well i dont know about the x58 board, can't really see why it wouldn't work though, but your psu should be just fine. I'm running an 850W psu and my gear tops out at less than 600W(it's also OC'ed).

    1. 2 x PCI Express x16 slots, running at x16 (PCIEX16_1/PCIEX16_2) (Note 2)
(The PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 slots conform to PCI Express 2.0 standard.)
    2. 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x4 (PCIEX4_1) (Note 3)
    3. 3 x PCI Express x1 slots
    4. 1 x PCI slot

My MB is only PCi 2 i think looking at the data for it above..does this affect the R9 cards potential as its PCi3 ??

EDIT, my friend Mr Google says it will be fine lol

Go for the one with the best cooling. A single fan is not as good as dual or triple fans.

Something to note on those r9's, on the site you linked, they are all single fan cooler designs. In performance mode, the fan noise will be pretty high. I'd almost recommend the 770s if you didn't want to wait for oem versions of the r9's. I also picked the 4gb versions of Gigabyte and MSI. Their cooling designs always review great, and the extra ram will help with higher settings in a game like skyrim. If you wait a few more weeks though, I think some of these companies will start coming with their versions of the amd cards, which are great performance to price ratio.
