If I am not mistaken the 690 has 2x4gb of Vram which is pretty much the same as 2Gb. THis is the single biggest drawback of keeping the GTX690. With more and more titles requiring at least 3Gb to run at max that 2GB is becoming a handicap in all future gaming. Then we discuss power and heat versus the 980. The 980 is also DX12 compliant. I would sell the 690 and get the most from it possible and grab a 980. Get one that is close to reference or one that is known to have blocks made for it later.

I am considering selling some of my other cards to pickup a 970 or 980 as well.

I agree, that 2GB of Vram is going to hurt it down the road.

depending on what you are playing currently it could already be hurting you. BF4 and a few others. Nvidia dropped the ball by clinging to lower vram for as long as they did. Can give AMD crap but they jumped on higher vram a gen and a half before nvidia. My 7950s have 3GB of vram but most of the GTX 770s still didnt? wth team green. Had to get a 780 to get 3GB. insanity.

Yep the 1st round of 770s were 2gb only. The 2nd Gen models had 3gb and a select few had 4gb.

Thinking about getting the second 4GB 770 card for SLI, but the 970s look very interesting too. They would take more cash, and therefore a longer time to get.

I agree, for a top-end card like the 690 there should of been at least 3GB vRam, otherwise it could of been going for a while longer. Not to say it's a slow card by any means but all these newer games are requiring more vRam. WC'ing it or not, it probably won't help too much.

What's your reasoning, aren't you worried about only having 2GB of vRam?

Simple, if your card have only 2GB of dedicated memory the system always assign an amount of system shared memory (depending of how much RAM you have), and you have Total Available Graphics Memory, which means if your GPU has no enough of the dedicated memory it lends it from a TGM (Total Graphics Memory), to compensate the lack of DM. It's a bit slower but it works in the games, so you can run your newer games on full settings without the problem, even in 4K.

right now, unless you need the extra vram, its still a good card. But for power to performance the new GTX970 or 980 are great cards for the money.
if you run only a 1080p monitor the 2GB of vram won't hurt you now, but down the light with more demanding games and application, it can.
