Default Buzzing noise from Msi Gtx 970 after I have been playing games.

    Hi.
I have noticed a electrical buzzing noise coming from what I think is my Asus Gtx 980 Strix as the noise has only become apparent since installing it.

It always happens after I have been playing games and the card is cooling down on 0% fan .

It only usually lasts 2-3 seconds. It almost sounds like a buzzing noise ( wasp noise bzzzzzzzz ).
And it's never under load. It just buzzing noise after card its been used heavily.( idle - windows )
Can you explain me why it's never under load? It always happens after I have been playing games , it happen on windows when card cool down. I think its normal .

Any ideas what it is? Anybody experienced something like this?

On title - Asus Strix 980 , not MSI. Sorry.

It is called Coil whine. It is very common in GPUs. there are a few things you can check to reduce coil whine but for the most part it is there to stay.

Read this as it might offer a more detailed explanation.

"Coil whine. It’s long been the bane of graphics cards and judging from the reaction on many forums the current darlings of NVIDIA’s lineup, the GTX 970 and GTX 980, may suffer from the same nagging issue as previous Radeon and GeForce products. Multiple posts and retailer feedback sections show a number of coil noise complaints but how widespread is it? There are plenty of frustrated, vocal folks out there who spent plenty of money for a brand new GPU and have been beset by high electrical noise footprints. "

So typically, coil whine only happens at certain levels of performance. For instance, I can play Wow WoD at ultra settings and get nothing. Pop up Borderlands 2, bam, get some coil whine. So it has something do to with how the program uses the card.

In your case, it sounds like running a game heats the card up, then, due to temps staying slightly elevated after load, the whine occurs at the low level load of the OS screen. I wish I knew the exact rhyme or reason but on the surface, it will usually seem pretty random.

I can not explain it. Every GPU is different even if it is the same exact model. I have a R9 290 that only have coil whine at the very beginning of TitanFall. That only started after an update from Titanfall too so it really makes no sense. Had a R9 280x that had coil whine when I first installed it. Was loud and annoying as hell, after a few weeks it stopped after I gave it a small voltage OC and Core Clock increase, then played games on it for a few hours. No longer does it at all. A MSI 660TI PE that had wicked coil whine when running MSI Kombuster and 3DMark but not during gaming.

It is common phenomenon in gpus but it seems to be VERY common on the 970 and 980s. A lot of the coil whine issue has to do with proper and solid grounding to the point of earth ground. Since none of us are going to rewire our houses or rebuild in different cases or change audio system we find ways to ignore it, drowned the noise out or replace the GPU with something else. There are just too many factors that can contribute to coil whine to try and fix them all. Live with it or replace it. Doesn't mean the replacement wont do the same or worse.

Edit* forgot the programing stuff mentioned by Josh. That is also something to toss in the mix. We can't win!

Yep. That is coil whine. It can be more of a high pitched noise or the buzzing bees you have. I currently have buzzing bees at the start of Titanfall. It is funny because it is only the Titanfall Logo and start screen buzzing. But the game itself is silent. haha Silly computers!

I have a question to be sure if it is really coil whine. Mine noise dont immediately ceases. Its slowly dissapear ( like air from baloon ). It can be coil whine too or not? Something like this:

I had coil whine on my of my R9 290s when I first got it. It was annoy as hell.. Mine never went away even after a few weeks or using it under load and at idle. I ended up processing a return with TD and got a replacement. Now none of my cards have coil whine. Its a total hit or miss with this kind of thing. If you ended up not being happy with it and is still in the return or exchange window, I would do it.

Exactly. Replacement or deal with it. If it is bothering you this much I say replace it.

    I
never heard that coil whine until the 680GTX came out, before that I had the 580GTX and the 480GTX and never heard It. Now Its almost common, I only hear It for a minute or two after my temps go up to about 60c and then Its gone when cooling.

    Hello. I have a question.
In Far Cry 4, before menu ,on a screen with PRESS ANY KEY TO START ( 196 fps ) , card occasionally start to buzzing too. Not always. Sometimes i can hear a buzzing sometimes not.
So if this is coil whine, coil whine can happens occasionally ( sometimes yes, sometimes not )? Or if it is coil whine it must happen always? Please answer. Thank you my friends.

If it only happens when you stop playing and doesn't while you are playing, set up a GPU Fan Profile to run the fans at a faster speed all of the time. The fan's cooling action will not drop-off and maybe there will be no coil whine.
