    Default It's Not A Radeon HD 5970. It's A Radeon HD 5870 X2

    Source: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...-4gb,2685.html

Asus' new ARES immediately earns bragging rights as one of the fastest single graphics cards ever created. We put the beast through a gauntlet of tests to measure this product's true power. At the end of the day, we answer whether it's worth four digits.

I love computer hardware. In fact, I love it so much that I built my career around it. But I have to admit, after reviewing countless graphics cards, nothing has ever come close to the excitement I experienced when I purchased my first 'big league' graphics card (It was the Canopus Pure3D by the way, sporting a colossal 6 MB of RAM when all of the other 3dfx Voodoo cards only had 4 M. The point is that, as an experienced reviewer tasked with testing hardware all day, it's rare that I feel anything close to the gleeful anticipation I did in the days of my youth.

How strange for me, then, when I come to realize that I'm wearing a huge cheese-eating grin while unpacking the Asus ARES graphics card.

At first I am a bit puzzled by the package on my doorstep. Asus mentioned that a graphics card was being sent for review. But this package is huge. It looks more the size of a laptop. There's very little information about the product inside, other than a Republic of Gamers (RoG) logo on the top left and some small Radeon-related logos on the bottom.

Yeah, but does it do Crossfire or not? I see it has the connections, but there's no mention of support at all.

A waterblock would slim its waistline to one slot, and then send its hefty ass to Jenny Craig.

It sure does do Crossfire as seen here. It just devours things at higher resolutions. Nevertheless it's still a bit far too expensive for my taste - you won't be seeing any value awards for this card.

Right on. At $1200 a pop, two of these is half the cost of a new PC. The sad thing is, that just doesn't seem expensive to me anymore. (A top-end PC runs about 30,000nok here, which translates to about $5000. Hence why I import. lol)

Problem is, nVidia is nearing the launch of the 490/495, which will probably trounce the Ares. Seems like throwing money away at this point. More so than at first glance.

I think ASUS themselves are working on an nVidia based, dual 480 card called the Mars II which is bound to be completely ridiculous. You just know it's going to cost several limbs on top of the Ares asking price. Not to mention the cost of the nuclear power plant needed to power it.
