Oh, I'm sitting here thinking about it too.
I just can't afford to do it, or I WOULD.
But your 980X is a rompin' stompin' son of a gun already. How much faster is fast enough?
Only you can answer that one.

And that's probably the soundest advice yet. At least for those of us who cannot (for financial reasons) buy new all of the time.
I know that my i7-2600K runs all that I need it to without any noticeable lag.
It's smooth, so I can afford to wait for an earth shattering improvement as opposed to an incremental one.

Your 2600k good to skip a couple gens with no trouble.
I shopped for a supposedly good batch on my 930, Good flat lap job and good cooling so I'm in the same boat.
4.5-4.6 good to go in Apps and gaming end of it, (If Needed), for quite awhile.

Chip shipped out a couple of hours ago, by the way I also talked to Noctua last week, their new LGA2011 D14 should be here by the end of the week or early next week. Now I have to decide if I should buy another 3930K for personal use, or run with the 3960X. Maybe I'll sell my last 990X build or the 2700K build, that way the price of the 3960X won't be that hard to swallow.

It's nice to have EE chip but I don't want to dream about it. So I'm waiting to see how the Ivy Bridge for the 1155 unfolds and deciding on building the LGA2011 rig or not.

Sometimes you just have to pull the trigger on your plan, and the minute your hardware hits the front doorstep
its already behind the curve.
Hardware has been far ahead of software since before the 286 days.
I shoot for visual, while setup being able to run any software you throw at it and no bottlenecks.

So, is it worth getting the 3960X? I have the money for it and ASUS R4E.
I want the best this time around, as I don't plan to upgrade for a few years. I need the PCI 3.0 for the next gen GPUs aswell.
But I'm not sure if I should go all out now or wait a while and see if there will be an 8-core out later. What do you guys think?
hi, good day. it's too expensive.

Let's put it this way, more than likely the 3930K will hit 5GHz with ease, and temps will be much lower than the 3960X. You will also be saving $500, so I would go with the 3930K for now and wait until Intel releases their new chips next year, it's only a couple of months away so it may be worth the wait.

Many people are suggesting that it would be best to wait for Ivy Bridge parts. (due out next spring)
They say it will develop more user CPU power and actually use less electricity doing it.
It has a new 22nm 3D transistor switch technology called Tri-Gate and that will contribute to it's efficiency.
It will be very fast.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure what to do now.
I won't buy the 3930K no matter what cause it's not the top chip. But if there is a better 6-core or an 8-core 3990X (just guessing on the number) coming out in January, I would wait for that.
I have to change my current MB due to faulty USB ports, so I though it would be a good time to upgrade.
I will atleast once get the top end $999 extreme chip, and think this is my best chance financially to do so.
btw Doc, is the TJ11 review coming soon, I think that case would be awesome for a top end build.

I have also been hearing things about the new Ivy Bridge ( Haswell) and people were saying that it would have compatibiliy with the socket 1155 motherboards, but thats not what I have been hearing, I hear that Intel has a new motherboard and socket for the Ivy Bridge " Haswell" Socket 1150 and while it might be cheaper than the X79, it might be worth the wait. This is all speculation of course but I have heard it in more than one place.
