    Default Good z77/ivy combo

Hey there, i'm trying to build a new pc for the last few days and i seem to get stuck at choosing the parts. I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to chosing parts but anyway it started out like something i really enjoyed and ended up being somewhat of a chore. As you can see the upgrade is long overdue, i feel like a need something better but i'm not sure to what extent.

What i usually do on a PC is visual studio programming, web development, games from time to time and have discovered overclocking as something intriguing that i like doing.

That being said I started from a 3450 with an asrock b75 board then chose a 3570k with an msi z77 g45 board to change it later to a 3770k with a gb ud3h board and then go back to the 3570k with an asrock z77 pro4. Now i found about haswell which really beeped me over. The gains on that chip seem outrageous, a new revolution in computing, so i went back to the 3770 with the gb board in hopes that the things i buy now won't be absolete 16 months down the line.

Bottom line, i am really upset, i was really looking forward to this upgrade but now i do not know if it's worth the investement. Should i get the 3770 and hope for the best or get something cheap that will bridge me to the haswell launch? On that matter is HT really that worth it? ( i mostly do visual studio programming and play games from time to time) Does ht have a future in gaming?

Believe me, the last few days have been gut wrenching for me since i hate throwing money out the window ( comes with living in an eastern european country) and i'm hoping for a somewhat competitive build for the next 2-3 years. I really need some help and the community here seems really friendly, at least that's what i gathered from some of the posts.

I hope this build chase will come to a rest, i planned on purchasing on Monday but it seems this will not be the case. Really looking forward to your opinions/ideas. Thank you.

Haswell is not due out to next year. 3770K is only 5% faster core foor core on average than the 2600K but the 2600K does not have PCIE 3.0. That said, PCIE 3.0 will not really make much difference in performance. I would get a 2600K and roll with an inexpensive Z77 motherboard. The 2600K runs much cooler than 3770K. I can set ya up with a Z77 mothertboard pretty cheap. PM me........

Thank you for the offers, unfortunately i live in Europe so the shipping costs would make any deal obsolete. That being said the 2600k is only 15$ dollars cheaper here and i won't be pushing for oc records on air to have to really worry about Ivy temps. What i can't decide is if an i7 is more of a bling than future proofing compared to the i5.

Haswell is indeed about a year away but it promises a lot of things, people compare it to going from pentium d to core 2 duo in modern terms. I know it's all fluff since nobody knows anything for sure and the ones that do have an nda to abide to but hey you can't judge a person concerned of his new builds longevity.

I believe that haswell will use a different socket so if you are building now then if you upgrade with haswell then you will need to get a new MB as well (and possibly ddr4 too)

Socket 2011 is going to be used again for IB-E and beyond I hear but there too is no guarantee that the pinouts will be the same so same rule applies

If you are comfortable with this then either 3570K or 3770K have the advantage of lower power use too if you intend to stay below around 4.5-4.6

When it comes to choosing a motherboard then we need to know what other cards and drives you have in mind for your uses. If you need a lot of pci-e slots and sata3 then maybe the gigabyte ud5 if not then maybe the Asus 5 Gene both of which have had good reviews and I can personally vouch for the Gene.

The only difference from i7 to i5 is hyperthrteading that creates virtual cores and handles multi threading better. Single threaded apps perform essentially the same on both and there is no such thing as futureproof BTW. I would get the i7 3770K and you will be set for a while IMO.

Yes, i know i can't upgrade any further if i get the i7 on this platform. My question really was, would i have the need to after Haswell hits? Would today's i7 become somewhat useless 10 months from now? I just got really scared after searching for haswell and most of the people reagard it as the second comming of Christ.

Thank you, it's nice here :d.

I just need this build to hold me for 2-3 years without getting too far behind in the cpu department. I hope for this to bridge me fairly well until the haswell tick which will most probably have DDR4 and who knows what advantages.

2-3 years is about right before you start thinking that what you have is slow...but it is only slow compared to the very latest processors usually so, in my opinion for what that is worth, go with a 3570K if the programs you use don't benefit from hyperthreading or better still get the 3770K to be able to get best performance on this rig for that bit longer perhaps with a program that does use hyperthreading that you might want to buy next year.

In the world of computers the second coming of Christ happens about every 2 years. Sometimes the new processor walks on water, other times, for one reason or another, it just walks.

I promise you that going from E6300 to 3770K will put a huge smile on your face..... especially if you put the OS on an ssd.

I would buy the i7 because visual studio is a multi-threaded program and will use the hyperthreading. If you buy now you will not have a need to upgrade when Haswell comes out. Typically I can make my builds last 3 years with no problems and I stretched that last one to 5 years and even it is still running strong just not as a main gaming system.

Thanks, will do, one question though, Corsair force gt or intel 330 for a ssd? what would you recommend. Thanks everyone for the help. I'll get the i7 with the z77x ud3h mobo.
