    Default cpu speed

hi all and i hope somebody can help me on a small matter of cpu speed.
i recently helped my sister to buy a pc and she was quoted for ajnd paid for an intel celeron 3.2 but in the bios and the post screen and in the program i used called siw it reports as 1.60ghz
do you think the local pc shop where i bought it has done a quick one on us or is it supposed to display as 1.60.
i was under the influence that a 3.2 would display as 3.2 or 3.20 ghz.
    sorry for spelling mistakes.
    thanks to all who reply.

    a celeron 420 is a 1.6GHz part: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=6&subcat=554

so it looks like they used the wrong processor. Before doing anything, get CPU-Z and see what model nomuber it says the cpu is.

    You can download CPU-Z here.

I've got the exact same CPU in another rig - indeed a 1.6GHz part. Looks like the shop has done the dirty on you.

How much did you pay for the CPU?

I don't think this is small matter!

Did you pay for 3.2Ghz system?
If you did. I think you got scamed here.
You paid for high end chip but they sold you a low end overclocked one. If I were you, I will take it back to the store and demanding your money back. The guy sold you the computer knows you don't know much about computer they will refuse to refund your money. They will not admit that they sold a cheap system for high price one.

Do know any body have computer knowledge so you can take him or her with you to the store. You can report this mater to the local authority or BBB (Better Business Bureau). Perhaps a local newspaper so they can expose these shady business. I'm just wondering how many computer that they've sold the buyer like you???

ok i have returned to the shop and he claims that he can no longer get 3.2 celeron so he replaced it with the 1.6 celeron and claims it is better because of larger cache.
being a suspicios sod i have phoned intel and asked which is better larger cache or larger ghz the guy said that the larger ghz is the better model so is celeron right??? i am guessing so.
i have called trading standards and they said the shop is breaking the consumer act 1979
the shop will refund us he said but thats still not the point. i kinda trusted this shop.goes to show how sneaky some people are.

Default Single core vs Dual core (which one better)?

He's full of crap as I expected. Yes biger cache are better but we are not comparing apple to apple here.

I believe you ordered Celeron D (dual) 3.2Ghz 256K cache and he replaced with Celeron (single core) 1.6Ghz 512k cache. I'll say NO

    Comparion
    Celeron D 3.2Ghz, 256k
    Celeron D 3.2Ghz, 512k <---- BETTER

Example: you go to BMW dealer and order 5xx series and they gave you 3xx series fully load and call it better????

Take the computer back and shut it where the sun don't shine and get your money back.

ok, i'll assume it is probably the 3.2GHz Celeron D with 256k cache, based on netburst (model 350 or 351) that he was meant to supply.

The CPU he replaced this for is the Celeron 420. a 1.6GHz Conroe based CPU, which is a cut down Core to Duo with only one of the cores enabled and the cache cut down from 4MB to 512k.

Architecturaly the one he used is an entirely different chip, and far more powerful per clock. In otherwords, if the original 3.2GHz Celeron was to be downclocked to 1.6GHz it would be much slower than the Celeron 420 he ended up using.

However, you were not going to get the old processor at 1.6GHz, it was to be at 3.2GHz, so the real question here is whether the Pentium based 3.2 GHz chip is faster or slower than the Conroe based 1.6GHz chip you now have, and i can't answer with hard evidence as i've never tested this scenario, but i think the 3.2GHz chip would be faster, but not be a great amount.

My advice is to complain to the shop that they should have informed you and not done this behind your back, and so to stop you from making a formal complaint with trading standards they should use a faster Conroe based Celeron than what they provided - minimum a Celeron 440, and if they argue this is too expensive, well it's there fault for trying to swindle you with false advertising and not informing you of system changes before shipping.

If they agree, i'd be confident the new chip will be faster than the chip he was meant to have used in the first place.

i have now phoned another 2 computer shops who have also said that the 3.2 will be better so it looks like its going back to the shop for a refund.

    thanks all who replied.

i thought Celeron D was single core?

I really don't see this as the big con it first appeared to be, its an entirely new chip based on Conroe and both deton and i missed this fact initially.

Yes its clocked low, but if you can get the upgrade to the 440 (2.0GHz) it will be better than the ancient netburst based 3.2GHz peice of junk, i assure you.

And if you have a decent motherboard, you can overclock it big time.

But having said that, if he is offering a full refund, you could take this and maybe build your own PC, we could help you fit a budget and get your money's worth and an excellent little machine
