    That's what I was thinking.
When I had Charter Cable as my ISP, my connection to anything on the east coast went from Fort Worth, TX to Dallas, to Indianapolis, Indiana to Fort Worth, TX to Wichita, KS to Dallas, TX before heading to points east. The World of Warcraft world server my gaming guild plays on was 19 hops away through 5 different networks.
Voice communications with Ventrillo, Skype, etc. were just frustratingly pointless.
A bit extreme, but I imagine not all that uncommon for a large portion of the population.

With my AT&T DSL service, it is 5 hops to the same server, a direct shot on AT&T's backbone.
