Adobe warns of impending security update

Adobe is warning users ahead of the planned release of a security update.
The company said that the release, which would take place on 8 January, would include fixes for both reader and Acrobat on the Windows, Macintosh and Linux platforms.
While Adobe has yet to specify the exact nature of the vulnerabilities being patched, the company listed two of the updates as top "Priority 1" deployments. The company said that the rating, its highest, was given to flaws which are "being targeted, or which have a higher risk of being targeted, by exploit(s) in the wild for a given product version and platform."
Adobe said that such patches should be applied by users and administrators within 72 hours of general release.
The company said that the top rating was given to the patch for Adobe Reader and Acrobat versions 9.5.2 and earlier 9.x versions on Windows systems. Later versions of both platforms for Windows, as well as all versions of Reader and Acrobat on Linux and OS X systems, were given a lower priority rating reserved for remote code execution flaws which have not yet been targeted in the wild and will offer a longer 30 day recommended deployment window.
Word of the updates from Adobe comes as Microsoft is preparing to release its monthly security update. The January "Patch Tuesday" release will arrive on 8 January and will address vulnerabilities in Windows, Office and Server.
Though often overlooked by users, Adobe's Acrobat and Reader platforms often rank amongst the most frequently-targeted platforms for exploits and malware attacks.
