Default Symantec says antivirus software 'is dead'

Symantec (SYMC) invented commercial antivirus software to protect computers from hackers a quarter-century ago. Now the company says such tactics are doomed to failure.Antivirus "is dead," says Brian Dye, Symantec's senior vice president for information security. "We don't think of antivirus as a moneymaker in any way."
Antivirus products aim to prevent hackers from getting into a computer. But hackers often get in anyway these days. So Mr. Dye is leading a reinvention effort at Symantec that reflects a broader shift in the $70 billion a year cybersecurity industry.
Rather than fighting to keep the bad guys out, new technologies from an array of companies assume hackers get in so aim to spot them and minimize the damage.

I can't count the systems that I've had to repair that were "Protected" by Norton software. I used to wake up in the morning and thank God for Symantec and Java software. They both kept me busy when I was still working on PCs for money.

Where i work/intern We actually have Norton and McAfee listed as Viruses because it does absolutely nothing. I personally use CommonSense 2014 ( not really i use Avast) and Malware Bytes, in the past i liked MSE and at Work se use ESET NODE 32

MSE and AVAST are good for free. IDK about ESET Node-32 though.

I use WebRoot Secure Anywhere these days. It has an extremely low overhead and scans ultra fast. It's good for 5 devices too. (PC, iOS, Android)

I have been trying Vipre Internet Security 2014 and I'm still undecided about it. Sometimes the firewall is a bit of a problem. Lifetime license is nice.

Nod 32 use to be good now it's bloatware. Norton and Mcafee back in the days were the best but now both of them are the worst! Norton is big bloatware and slows your computer down and heard it plants viruses so it can find it to make it seem like its doing something. dont know if that part is true or not though.
You don't know me and that's the way i like it!

Oh crap,......sorry about that. My little dog just had a stroke a few days ago and I'm all screwed up.

Vipre is what my wife's school uses. Seems to be good, but it's locked down too much for me to really look at it. Her 17" Dell Lappy has never been infected.

She's doing better every day. It was a weird situation with her, but it looks like she's gonna be OK as long as it doesn't happen again.
