Default unable to connect to proxy server

My boy is a terror for gaming websites and as a result it is necessary to run malwarebytes regularly.

The latest issue is one of browser unable to connect to proxy server.

He has mentioned trying to set up a game server for minecraft

I know nothing of proxy servers. I could use some help or pointers for re setting any changes he might have made if the malwarebytes run does not fix this.

    Hey Grumpy,

It's likely in his connection settings. I can't remember where in Win7 or Win8.1 thes are stored, but essentially, there's a tick box that says "use this proxy for all connections". Sometimes those add-on toolbars will add a proxy that points to their servers so they can serve you crazy ads.

Ah, here it is. On my win7 machine, if I go to the run box and type "proxy", in the search results you'll see "Configure proxy server". Click that link, and it should take you to the Internet Properties dialog. Click on Lan Settings at the bottom, and you'll see a dialog that talks about the Proxy server. delete the info in the Address box, and uncheck the "Use a proxy server..." then hit OK. It should delete the proxy server, and start to send all it's traffic through whatever gateway your ISP uses.

    Good Luck.
    S.

You may want to do all of this ~^^^^~ and then run your anti-spyware program. Reboot and check that your proxy settings have not been changed back during the reboot.

Actually cleared the issue with Malwarebytes and a re-boot. But the above info on settings is interesting/useful especially as he wants to have another go with running a minecraft server for him and his mates and frankly I am all for him learning about such stuff...... Particularly as it is not on this connection

A side note: My son has run a number of Minecraft Servers, and the only thing he should need to do on your local network, is port forward the IP address/port number from the outside interface of your Router to the IP Address of the machine he has the Minecraft server running on.

However, given the generally juvenile nature of a large number of Minecraft players, I'd _strongly_ suggest paying a nominal fee for him to have a hosted Minecraft server, almost ANY place other than your home network. Shift the burden of security off onto a hosting company rather than yourself.

    Good Luck!

Also, I had one of those bugs get in some registries without changing the settings in internet options. I was able to get rid of it using ccleaner and the internet started working again. Also, I like to reset the IE browser after that happens.

I second Gu3's idea and can recommend having a look at these guys for your game server hosting. Of course, there are other options than 1&1 but I've only had experience with them so wouldn#t want to suggest one I don't know about.

All I can say is "shifting the burden of security" makes playing simply more fun.

    Good luck !
