USB 3.0 Group Proposes Eliminating Proprietary Laptop Chargers

But the USB 3.0 Promoter Group has published a new standard [PDF], which proposes using new USB 3.0 power cables as a ubiquitous replacement to proprietary adaptors. Under the proposal, laptops could draw up to 100 watts off of bi-directional, backwards compatible USB 3.0 cables.

I doubt this will happen. The OEMs count the charger as a "Consumable" and as such are only warrantied for up to 90 days after date of purchase or the laptop. This serves the purpose of you having to buy a new adaptor. This is how the make money on accessories. I cant see the OEMs just saying ok we will give up this revenue stream so anyone can make an adaptor for my product.

They had this small discussion when it came to mobile devices. They all said they will be using the micro usb. This was 2 years ago lol. Mobile is still closer then laptops in having a uniform charging system. There are mainly 3 types of usbs you will see on phones.

    We will see.
