    Talking A New Laptop

    Hey Everybody,

As many of you have i'm sure read, my current laptop has to be replaced. For more details on that, refer to my post under the hardare forum. It's titled Need Help.

So now I refer to your expertise. I need to get a laptop, as I am a college student and need it for school. So here are my questions. What are the advantages of going with a quad core laptop other than the obvious speed factor? What is the best processor? Do any of you care for a particular brand? Are there advantages of going to Windows 7 or is it not worth the hype?

I appreciate you guys answering my questions.

    Hugs,

    Emily

What type of work/play are you doing with the laptop?

Choose a right processor is all depend on the application that you are going to use.

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Email/Internet surfing and games - dual core is sufficient but this is the past tech
Multimedia - music/video encoding plus the above - quad core are more suitable

Regarding to brand, Intel chips is the king of the hill at the moment but AMD is not bad either and it's much cheaper than Intel. Since and I know you are not going and can not overclock the laptop then why not go with AMD processor, you will save few $$$.

If Windows 7 included (should be no extra cost when the time you upgrade) with the lapton then why not?
It's must faster OS than Vista in certain areas of course, just make sure all the hardware have the driver for Windows 7. Since it's not officially release to the mainstream so be careful with driver availability.

In general you should wait at least the SP1 released before you upgrade the OS, this way you know the bugs is fixed.

Here's one really good-looking laptop (specs vs. price wise):

    Acer Aspire AS5739G-6132 @ newegg

    Specs:
Operating System: ....Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
    CPU Type:
    ....................Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 2.1G
    Screen:
    .........................15.6"
    Memory Size
    : .............4GB DDR3
    Hard Disk:
    ...................250GB
    Optical Drive: .............
    DVD Super Multi
    Graphics Card
    : ......... NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M
    Communication:
    ........Modem, Gigabit LAN and WLAN
    Dimensions: ...............16.14" x 11.25" x 1.37-1.63"Weight6.1 lbs.
    Other Features:
    .........Fingerprint reader

Its light weight, making it easier to carry around campus, and has a good graphics card for your gaming needs. Honestly, I'd say this graphics card might be more than you need, but then again, the Sims 3 can bog you down a little bit if you turn all the settings up (at least for my girlfriend on her 8600GTS).

Really though, just stick to what you can afford. This one is around $750 right now on the egg, and is great price vs. performance if the specs are any indication.

    Hey Deton,

Thank for the input you gave. I do all of the things you listed as I am a music major at school. I am working with Jake and Stan to choose the best bang for my buck. I appreciate you telling me the pros and cons of windows 7. I am going to be going with Vista for now until the SP1 is released because of the bug factor. Thanks for your input once again, and if you see something out there that might work, please go ahead and email me. I will take any and all things into consideration.

    Hey Shattered,

Wow, that sounds like a great deal. As I said to Deton, if Jake and Stan like it, then I will definetely consider it. I really appreciate it. If you happen to see a good deal with a quad core, please let me know. I do alot of stuff for my music classes that requires CD authoring. I know since I have a limited budget I can't have the world, but I am going to try and get as much as I can.

That's a pretty good deal Em. And believe it or not, Dell has some very good deals. I wouldn't buy a desktop from them but their laptops are pretty good actually. And they normally have some great back-to-school specials so you'll probably be able to find a great deal. They usually send out flyers too so keep an eye open.

Make sure you get 4GB of RAM and a good CPU. Don't compromise on those. Beyond that, hard drive size is whatever works for you. And graphics card depends how much gaming you plan on doing. A "general use" laptop is pretty easy to find, but one that's capable of gaming is another story, so keep your eyes open and do a bit of research. We can help out if you post some options
