    Default Moniter refresh rate.

Ok heres the problem.well actually its not realy a problem, but its making me wonder. My dell monter can run at 60hz, 70hz or 75hz. But whenever i set it above 60hz if i look at the options on the actual moniter (using the buttons on the moniter its self) it says the current refresh rate followed by "the optimum refresh rate is 60hz"
is this just because the moniter will last longer at 60hz? or will it not perform as well at 70hz or 75hz?

EDIT: also , while im here.does anyone know if you can get the offical ati catalist control centre to display fps in games?

use FRAPS for monitoring FPS in games.

do you have a TFT? i'm not sure i understood correctly. You can select 75hz, but it suggests 60hz as the optimal?

Some TFT's don't like running higher than 60hz, and 60hz is pretty much the defacto standard on TFT's. You can check around the net to see if your monitor is happy at 75, though, as many are.

To me it's the big drawback of TFT's. I can't wait for 120hz capable screens, it will make all the difference in high speed games.

are you running through dvi, and was the 75hz option just available, you didn't have to use a third party app to get it? Just curious...

oh, and what size and res is your screen?

ok matey, was asking as mine doesn't, but i think its because of the res i'm in and it not supporting 75hz over dvi (1920x1200).

it's available at lower resolutions, it's dvi bandwidth limitations thats the problem.

no it's the interface chip in TFT monitors and the bandwidth limitation of DVI single link. This is the same for all current TFT's.

Here's a reply from Simon with some info, he's knows far better than I:

The max bandwidth of DVI is 1920 x 1200 @ 60hz. If you do run a TFT at 75Hz it just causes it to skip frames anyway since the interface chips are designed to run at 60Hz anyway.

It's a big drawback imo. I used to run my CRT at 1280x960 at 120hz and if you have enough GPU horsepower to give you a constant 120fps it was simply incredible in CSS and would give any player who isn't blind an advantage. NOw i'm capped to 60fps, but i'm getting used to it, and the screen size means i can aim much more accutely than i used to.
