I never had an issue installing my SSD but I set it up as the only drive in ACHI mode prior to install, pretty much as edio pointed out.

I install Win 7 on so many systems, every time I review a motherboard, benching, you name it. USB install, AHCI, a few tweaks on startup. Boom, done.

Doug, sorry to hear about your troubles...

You know, if you don't play the game in multi-player mode, you can run Steam games offline, once it does its verification check.

Also, as I said before, there is no need to re-download the games each time you do a new build. I have now done it numerous times and have had little to download for each game, using the method I outlined before.

I'm not sure what it may be called in your bios but it will give the option to either setup your drives in an IDE or ACHI you have to choose ACHI, IDE is the default

    RE: " Steam verification etc"
    - My Game drive is from the same PC - the one I just loaded Win 7 on - It is on a separate demountable drive running XP, that goes in the tray/caddy - so I don't have 2 PCs to do what you suggested...

    Questions:

    1) When I plug in
    a) one of the XP OS drives or
    b) the separate Win 7 drive, what MB drivers are loaded?

    2) What MB Bios drivers would currently be installed if I only updated them when XP 32 bit was being used?

    3) If I were to update MB Bios for Win 7 64 bit, what happens if I then load one of the drives that has XP 32 bit on it?

First, before I consider your questions, I need to ask - what problem exactly do you want to solve here? Is it the issue of steam verification? I don't know if you're aware that you can install Steam games authorized on your account on an unlimited amount of computers and/or unlimited amount of drives. Steam doesn't care about that. The real restriction is that your account can only be logged on/active on one computer at a time. In other words, if you have Steam installed on your work PC, your game PC twice on two separate hard drives, and on your laptop, you can only be logged on from one of those four installs - but it is fully permitted to have those four installs.

I did this on two PCs because I was copying files from my parent's computer to my new personal one. As I said above, Steam doesn't care where you copy its files - to another PC, to another drive on the same PC, or even to another folder on the same drive. It's all allowed. You might break some shortcuts inherent in the Windows registry, which is why you do the "repair" option I outlined for Steam to make those minor fixes.

    Questions:

    1) When I plug in
    a) one of the XP OS drives or
    b) the separate Win 7 drive, what MB drivers are loaded?
I don't get the question about Motherboard drivers... Is this still in re: Steam verification? Steam doesn't check your motherboard type as Windows does in Genuine Advantage. In any case, the motherboard drivers loaded in Windows are the ones in the install of Windows that you used to boot the system. If you boot Windows XP, it's the drivers loaded in that install of XP. Vice versa if you boot the Win 7 drive.

    2) What MB Bios drivers would currently be installed if I only updated them when XP 32 bit was being used?
I don't follow what you mean by motherboard BIOS drivers. There are motherboard drivers in Windows, and there is the firmware contained within the BIOS and they are two separate things. Motherboard drivers are whatever you installed in that particular installation of Windows. BIOS firmware is whatever is flashed onto the BIOS when you bought the motherboard, unless you manually flashed a new firmware onto the BIOS.

    3) If I were to update MB Bios for Win 7 64 bit, what happens if I then load one of the drives that has XP 32 bit on it?
If your question is asking, "If I flash new firmware onto my BIOS and boot off of the Windows XP drive, will anything go wrong because it's 32-bit?" The answer to that is no. 64-bit support is inherent in your whole ecosystem. Your i7-920 processor is inherently 64-bit. Your motherboard is designed to support your processor. In Windows 7 64-bit, a program is either coded as 64-bit, and natively supported, or it is coded as 32-bit, and then emulated in Windows. That is why you will see a C:\Program Files - for 64-bit programs - and a separate C:\Program Files (x86) - for programs that are coded as 32-bit and thus run in x86 emulation mode.

Now, if you are asking, "If I install new motherboard drivers on my Windows 7 64-bit install, what happens if I insert my games drive and load games from there?" The answer is nothing weird will happen if you're loading games coded in 32-bit. These 32-bit games will continue to be run in x86 emulation mode. The only problem is 16-bit games and programs, which are not compatible with 64-bit Windows. This is why you have the Windows XP Virtualization mode, in which you can load your really old 16-bit games and programs.

Doug, I trust all of this is making sense to you. If not, feel free to ask additional questions.
