    Default Windows 8 Start button

Microsoft reportedly working to block apps that re-enable the Windows 8 Start button

Microsoft appears to be taking steps to remove legacy code from its Windows 8 operating system that will prevent modifications and hacks to re-enable the Start button and Start Menu. Windows watcher Paul Thurrott reports that the company has been "furiously ripping out" legacy code in Windows 8 recently that lets third parties bring back the Start button, Start Menu, and other legacy parts of the desktop interface. Thurrott claims that several well-known UI hacks that enabled the Start Button in the Consumer Preview do not work on the Release Preview.

They are trying to convert us over to the new, stupid tile like interface they use on Windows phones. I think they will run into a lot of resistance from the business community, which is where most Windows sales go.

For the most part the business community is running XP Pro. A few of the law firms/lawyers I contract with just recently switched to Win 7 and Office 2010. Got a lot of phone calls asking for help. The learning curve for a new OS for the ordinary worker is why the corporate community doesn't upgrade quickly. A lot of lost time and productivity teaching people how to use new tech.

As of the last time I saw it, pressing the Windows key brought up the Metro UI Interface. If this is the direction that Microsoft is going in, I'm sticking with 7. Or, I'll start working on modifying the kernal to allow the Start button again. If that fails, it looks like its back to Linux for good.

I thought the Windows Key worked fine in the Consumer Release, at least it worked for me.
