Ubuntu seems like it's gotten too Apple App Storified. What's good for a clean Linux experience?

Debian, its the Distro Ubuntu is based off of, and Debian with Openbox or Gnome feels crisp, clean and lightweight (Because it is)

Is linux something I can modify myself once I learn some code? Simple things like appearance for example. Customize my own desktop, layout, the colors, etc.? Linux seems interesting. I have to do some real research on it first but I think Im a try it, and looking at Zorin, it looks rather cool. But I havent checked any other mods out there so, this weekend maybe, will be a time for me to do a lil reading on linux.

It's very customizable. Without having to learn code for it.
