Personally, I use Mint Cinnamon and find it quite intuitive for a mostly windows user. Folks here have extolled the virtues of Zorin as being the most windows looking.

Because these are based on Ubuntu you can find that answers to any problem are often resolved the ubuntu way which you will find tons of help for online. the dedicated forum for mint is pretty good too.

I would suggest Ubuntu or mint cinnamon for a proper system . And xubuntu or lubuntu for older and slower systems.

    I'm using lubuntu on a 256mb ram 2.0 p4

I tend to use ubuntu, tried mint cinnamon and it was great but it wasn't really good enough to pull me away from ubuntu. Also tried zorin but it just didn't really work at all so yea...

Fedora is awful to try and learn on, like many other have said go with Ubuntu or Mint.

Or, if your up for the task, BackTrack 5 is fun to play with.

You will like Mint, it is really a nice distro. And as has been mentioned, they have a very good community for problem solving.

Kali did "replace" Backtrack, beacause it is a more stable, safer, less demanding version and has a lot more features perfect for pen testing.

Ubuntu is great for beginners, Debian Stable for people who don't like Ubuntu but still want some stability and ease of use, and if you have a little bit of experience or need something with very little resource usage i recommend Crunchbang, I managed to run a laptop from 1990 with 512MB of RAM using Crunchbang. And lastly, if you're a glutton for punishment and want to manually compile every program from source, then use Gentoo. Arch is a good choice too but requires a little bit of experience too.
