Default Re: What's your experience with W8.1 PRO (Good or Bad)

I have it on my laptop, but not desktop... so far, I am ok with it, but if I had to choose between 7 or 8.1 I would choose 7.
The only reason i have stuck with 8.1 is due to the fact that my laptop has no win 7 drivers available.

But the annoyance of the 8.1 is just that metro GUI, I still haven't gotten use to it yet and since my laptop isn't touch screen its much harder to work with than if I had a touch screen. Also I have some issues with software, not everything is win 8 ready that I use which also caused more headache, but for the most part, its a OS is ok, but win 7 is still better for me.

Windows 8.1 introduces many new and improved features, including the option to boot to the desktop, deep SkyDrive integration, and an updated UI, which now supports dynamic Snap for multiple apps or sharing the desktop wallpaper with the Start screen. Most of the changes, however, are behind-the-scenes, which may be why so many people are having issues. Generally, I’d recommend that you stick with Windows 8, unless you read about a Windows 8.1 feature that you absolutely need. In that case you should prepare to upgrade to Windows 8.1 with the option to roll back.

I am not ready for it and will stick with 7 for some time to come. It still has issues and until its totally worked out I am staying clear of it

You can try Start8 (using W8 with complete W7 environment).

I haven't tried 8.1 personally, but a friend of mine switched from 7 to 8.1 recently. I asked him about benefits he gained, he said the only main one is speed. Also he didn't have any compatibility issues yet. Personally I wouldn't go for 8.1 if your 7(if you r on win 7) is nicely optimized and/or you are running ssd.

I'm using Windows 8 from months...and then I upgraded to 8.1 . My experience is positive. The speed is awesome...and I had some little problems with software..fixed soon. I also got used to the new interface, arranging icons in sections and giving them a name, ex Internet, Office, Multimedia, Utilities and Games. After some time looking for software only on desktop, I started using the new Metro interface successfully. I often search for software typing it on the new menu and so on. I'm enjoying the new Media Center too...I love how I can watch/record TV with the MCE remote and a cheap tv stick . I also upgraded to an FX 8-core cpu and Windows 8 should manage it better than 7

Not so sure, but I think W8/8.1 is made more for multimedia and entertainment instead of demanding professional work with heavy software. Waiting for W9.

i've been using it since it hit the market, and so far not a single problem. You can boot directly to desktop without any extra software, which is nice. and not having the start-button actually isn't that great a loss. there is not much improvement in speed for me though compared to win 7 (~4 sec faster boot from 13.5 to 9.6 sec is the only thing faster). After little more than 6 months, i'd say i actually prefer win 8/8.1 over win 7.
