Default A friend gave me an OS

Yep, as the title says, I have been using vista 64 bit from a laptop I purchased used two years or so ago? Anyway, my laptop is broken thus I built a new desktop. A dear friend of mine gave me his win 7 os disc with the license to install for my new pc. :P I think this is legal? right? If not, please tell me so. My question though, in regards to the OS disc and my new pc, I got a pop up today that says I have 30 days to register the cd or OS online... I tried this, and I got a pop up that says it was a no go. That means it didn't work. Is there anything I can do about this? I thought you were allowed limited # of loans of an OS. I am NOT using pirated OS, I have the disc and case with the key on it. So what could be the problem? Did Windows change their policy? Or am I breaking a law via installing the gift OS on my HD? Is there a way to register the OS So I do not have to pay for one right now? could buy the OS but... Im a student and have spent all I could on the pc and other bills, expenses, etc, and have only budgeted so much to be spent for this half year. What can I do? :P

    Also...

I was wondering... Linux? or something? I dont think its free anymore, right? Do I need to know programming to install or use linux? I have watched a few YT vids on Linux, it looks nice, seems secure, but... I have no experience in this dept as Im pretty much a computer noob. I would appreciate some advice. If you have some, please chime in! :P thanks again!

If your friend installed it and registered his PC with it then It is saying it is pirated because that Key is already in use.

Disclaimer- PureOC does not condone piracy or circumventing any means of security. PureOC does not condone the use of Windows Key Generators and Activation hacks that can be downloaded using popular torrent trackers like ISOhunt, Piratebay, Torlock or search Windows KeyGen followed by the word torrent in google.

The OS is legitimate, but the key is already in use (that's why the message of NO Go pops), if is not an MAK key (which I doubt it is), so your solution is to go to MS site and buy the genuine key.

Linux is viable for the near term. LXLE 64-Bit has a lot of the ~feel of windows~ and comes with everything you need to use the PC. Understand that there is a learning curve, but it's free and easy to learn to use. (did I mention that it's free?)

Zorin OS Is another full featured, free version of Linux that is easy to learn. In both cases, get the 64-Bit version unless your PC gear is old.

Great! So I guess Ill have to re install all this stuff. My roommate has his win 7 installed on his pc, yes. He mentioned something though, at least I recall this, that referred to multiple people using the one key... but a limited number... meaning, if he bough the win 7, he can pass it out to family or friends, limited to 3 keys registered. but I guess that is not the case anymore? IDK. Ok so I will try linux. The learning curve will be helpful, I like a challenge. Kinda makes me sad though, I like my current setup, but who knows, Maybe Ill like the new setup more. I guess I got a bunch of research to do then.

So If you were to recommend linux to a friend, which you have given me two examples or OS to try, what tutorials or guides should I find for me to start with? These two OS is what you would use? I read that there are many versions of linux out now, which have been adjusted from the original linux release... I want to game, search the web, watch videos, make art and edit art, video and picture, on my pc. I also produce music on this, Id like security and stability for sure. :P thanks for any further tips and guides.

You can buy a 3 pack of certain Windows versions, but I never actually bought one so I don't know if it's three different keys or the one key shared out. Also, sometimes you'll get an error that Windows won't activate when the hardware changes dramatically. I've had this problem a couple times where I upgraded a system, knew the license key was only on one, but it still wouldn't activate. Then I would just call it in and it would work. Just make sure that key isn't meant for only one system and in current use.

Default Re: A friend gave me an OS

So I talked with my friend today, and he is going to call Microsoft to see what is going on. He paid for his windows, he feels he can pass it out to whomever he wants and that they should be able to activate the OS. I on the other hand am not expecting anything out of it, He said he installed the same disc on his grandparents and brothers computer, plus he has his own computer, on top of that he gave me the cd for a week to install on my new system. I have been researching Linux this week a little and have come to 4 decisions, Im currently downloading the desktop (free) versions of Linux: Mint(CINNAMON), Ubuntu, Zorin, and Dreamstudio... I bought some cdr's today as well, to burn the original files to a disc to keep handy, plus I will back up on a 16GB portable drive. It is about time I feel, I woke up at 3 am with my computer on, running, after I knowingly shut it down at midnight... when I was upset about a personal matter, I was arguing with a family member and just had enough and went to bed, shutdown my pc and I seen it shutoff... IDK how or why it came back online. I also noticed huge difference in load time and performance now that windows has loaded a **** load of updates, microsoft visual c++ etc, theres like 7 of them now... IDK why there has to be 7 of these, some from 2005 up to 2012 release dates... I did not manually install even though I did uncheck the auto update option in system settings. Now it takes about 45 seconds to boot, almost a minute from a cold start. prior to these updates, my computer would boot in about 30 seconds... very fast! I can see the difference and its huge. Anyway, Im excited about the linux OS and will be in touch. :P

Yeah, that sounds like he's pirating his OS out. Linux sounds like the safe bet.

I wouldnt call that pirating out though, he payed for his windows... it is his. Its horrible how we tag terms like this cause it makes it sound illegal or like he is a bad guy, thus myself too cause I put the purchased cd into my drive. I mean, lol, he has a case for the cd, the license key on that case... Pirated, sounds like he illegally copied the product with out paying for it, and or, hacked the software to make it run, where it should not. To me that is a logical definition to that term, in which this case, we didnt do any of that. He purchased it. how can that be pirating behavior? That makes me rather uncomfortable and uneasy to be honest. Ill be happy to use Linux now, Im sick of that mentality of ownership and greed thru the ego...

Hence the reason I said pirating OUT. He may have paid for a legal copy, but if he shares it to others, they have a pirated copy. And if he's making those people think it's ok to share out that key while he's already using it, it's illegal. That doesn't make him a terrible person, doesn't make Microsoft products any less expensive, but it is the law, as well as the agreement, that the License key is to be in use on one computer only. I'd have to scour the user agreement but it's possible that it is meant for one computer ONLY, not at a time, but even I haven't followed that all the time.

All that being said, if you're using his CD but using your own key, I'm sure that's generally ok, but even then it could be breaking some agreement. In a certain sense, we are all possibly guilty of being "pirates" at some point. The laws are such that it is almost impossible not to break something. Likely, nobody will be prosecuted, but the general consensus is that you make sure you have paid for each key you have in use. That's being fair to the company while still making personal use reasonable.

Sorry my man but josh is right. Retail copies of Windows is a single user/PC license. He may have paid for it but he is in fact breaking the law and EULA agreement you agree too when he installed that copy of Windows on his PC. Therefore he is in fact pirating out Windows. I find it unlikely that he purchased a corporate multi user license pack. If he did buy a corporate license he is still breaking the EULA agreement with the way he is distributing the copies of windows.

Its not so much the disc, it is the license key that is the problem. He may feel like he purchased it and he can do whatever he wants to do with it but sadly he is wrong. I know this because I am a Certified Microsoft Partner, Technet Member and many OEM certifications over 16 years in the industry.

He isn't a bad person. He is just misinformed.

Linux is a smart move for you. Lots of great distros out.

Go Linux or buy Windows, there is no other legal solution. Both (Josh and Cyber), are right.

Ok guys, I really appreciate the facts! It means a lot to me to be squared away and not breaking the laws. I may be a rebel a times, but I don't disagree with idea that software is designed, which takes people time and effort to apply work for a product, and that should be honestly rewarded... thus I understand and believe people should pay for the softwares. I see what you are saying, I doubt he payed for a corporate license as well... lol... he is only 19 and isn't working for any company nor does he run a business, hes a gamer and tech friend. I totally respect what you all are telling me here and I do feel guilty for installing but I was misinformed on the matter. I have downloaded four versions of Linux and will attempt to install them on my hd's and compare, and see which one I prefer and then install that on my main drive. I would purchase win 7, I love it, tbh... I'm familiar with it, and always have been a Windows user. I'm not impressed with vista but have little complaints about it, other than my motherboard softwares wont work with that OS. So for the time being Linux it is and Ill get this version of Win off my hd asap. Again this morning, I was attempting to sleep in, its like 11 am now, and at 10:30 my computer turned on again without my pushing the button. also the router we have is all of a sudden having issues staying connected to the modem. I feel the guilt. I'm the worst pirate out there guys, it just doesn't feel right. Thanks for the facts and support and not being a butt-head about it either! I appreciate you very much!

    love and light
