you should get an activtion window where you are meant to call MS for a new auth id, did this happen or not?

you may want to call them any way and tell them this, they'll probably give you a new id.

Have you installed any new harware?
Vista detects hardware changes and asks for reactivation. Nothing to worry about if you have a genuine copy. Same happened to me i just reactivated windows with the online option. For some this dosent work and they have to do by phone. Its supposed to stop a version of windows been installed on more than one system, but its not without problems as in your case.

You re-format the hard drive or just re-installed over the existing setup?
Re-format is the way to go. What did you do to cause this issue in the first place, unfinishing windows updates?

no i did re format, i never just install over the old windows. my problem seems to have gone away, or at least part of it. i did install a new psu, that could be what caused it. but my windows defender/firewall services still wont come on during startup.
