How do I used an activation code to download a game on Steam?

Here is my situation. I won the CM Storm Sentinel Zero-G mouse in the giveaway. It comes bundled with a free copy of the game Shattered Horizon. I followed the instructions on Cooler Master's site and they sent me an activation code for the game, then told me to go to my Steam account to download and activate the game. However, I can't figure out how to download the game from Steam without purchasing it. Everytime I try to download, Steam asks to bill my credit card. Anyone have a solution? Thanks.

Open the Steam applet if it isn't already running. Go to the Games tab on the main menu bar. Choose: "Activate a product on Steam..." Follow instructions.

This is true, you have to "activate the game" before you try to download it.
