Default Greatest PC Games Ever Made

Here it is: the conclusion of our epic survey to discover the greatest PC games ever
committed to floppy disc, silicon, or digital download. Thanks to all who voted. Here are your winners.
    http://www.computerandvideogames.com...43708&site=pcg

    20. Wurm Online
    Release: 2006
    Last year: New entry
It's like a first-person, massively multiplayer medieval town-building sim, except you're not the guy in charge, you're one of the toiling peasants. Struggle against starvation and bears, work to transform the world around you by building homes, farms and castles.
    PCG

    19. Left 4 Dead 2
    Release: 2009
    Last year: New entry
Screaming at idiotic friends through VOIP, burning zombies by the bucketload, the in-game debates as to whether sleeping with a zombie would be necrophilia, attempting to kill a witch by just meleeing her, I want a game of it now...
    David Danut

    18. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows Of Amn
    Release: 2000
    Last year: 14
The sound of Minsc booming "Butt Kicking, for Goodness!" while getting a critical hit on a goblin (sending pieces of the deceased flying) still brings a laugh even ten years after the game came out.
    Dominic M

    17. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
    Release: 2003
    Last year: 18
Better characters and narrative than were coming out from the movies at the time. HK-47 is what C3PO should have been. Creating a character that is, by virtue of being a robot, purely logical, then portraying him as 'evil' is pure genius. He's a total total badass and my favourite character in gaming to-date.
    Des Molas

    16. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
    Release: 2003
    Last year: New entry
No other game matches the teamplay of Enemy Territory. Mods are still being developed and improved. Maps are coming out almost every month. A big community is actively producing content and helping each other.
    ailmanki

    15. BioShock
    Release: 2007
    Last year: 13
An art deco city under the sea, overrun by psychotics with psychic powers. In bunny masks. Big Daddies. Little Sisters. Sander ****ing Cohen. A world being torn apart by its own hubris. Shooters aren't often about anything except killing: BioShock is about a philosophy gone wrong.
    PCG

    14. Starcraft
    Release: 1998
    Last year: 8
This was my first RTS experience at a LAN party, so I had no clue what was happening. I finally managed to gather enough resources and buildings to make this expensive unit . What I got was a slow-moving beetle like thingy with an attack button that you could not press. So I just kept moving it around hoping it would do.
    Wuppy

    13. Portal
    Release: 2007
    Last year: 7
Aperture Science would like to remind you that Portal is the Best Game Ever. Those disputing Portal's claim to the title of 'Best Game Ever' should speak to our complaints department, located in the Incineration Annex. Thank you.
    Jonathan Bushell

    12. Mass Effect
    Release: 2008
    Last year: 30
Everything that's good about the RPG genre, but realised in a fresh, intelligently thought-through science fiction universe that has absolutely nothing to do with the emperors and magic swords of Star Wars. Instead: plausible
characters, in stories written for grown-ups.
    PCG

    11. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
    Release: 2007
    Last year: 5
I started this up on a friend's computer and was hooked within minutes of storming the oil tanker. CoD4 had me feeling like I was Jack Bauer, Rambo and James Bond all mashed into one. Memorable moments include the sniper level in Chernobyl and the nuclear blast.
    jnjn

    10. World of Warcraft
    Release: 2004
    Last year: 4
My first RPG and MMO. I've had many good times (and a few bad), learning that a MMO is quite different from singleplayer. From day one I was hooked and this game is the longest one I have played. Now playing it less, but occasionally returning to have some fun.
    Wuppy

    9. Half-Life
    Release: 1998
    Last year: 9
Half-Life was the first game that told the story to me inside the character's perspective. The opening of the game was just mind blowing and no other FPS does that today. I love being taken on a Disney ride type of journey in a game, I don't want to just view it all in a cutscene like other games.
    Scaramoosh

    8. Dragon Age: Origins
    Release: 2009
    Last year: New entry
The world is wonderfully built and the characters are full of personality that keeps me interested in the game. To top it off I actually understand the level-up system. The combat system is one of the best I've played with in an RPG. To sum up: it is awesome.
    Sam Harris

    7. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
    Release: 2006
    Last year: 12
Bethesda's vast, open-world RPG not only looked gorgeous (OK, apart from the people), it had a seemingly limitless supply of quests, dungeons, adventures, people to meet and things to do. From hunting vampires to making it rain burning dogs, Oblivion had it all.
    PCG

    6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
    Release: 2009
    Last year: New entry
The most modern of the warfares, the sixth Call of Duty is now a runaway success. A bombastic, over the top storyline that doesn't make much sense is saved by intense bullet-action, an updated multiplayer and new cooperative missions.
    PCG

    5. Team Fortress 2
    Release: 2007
    Last year: 6
Throughout history the rule has been, 'The man with the hat, win-eth the battle-eth'. On occasions where both sides have had hats, these are decided by which side has the best and most hats. TF2 is therefore the most accurate and chilling depiction of the realities of war in our modern culture.
    Lack_26

The game's changed so much over the three years, all for free. I can't think of anything I've paid for that I've gotten as much value out of. New maps, new weapons, bots, a thriving community. There's nothing like it, and Valve are amazing for making it.
    Harvey Banks

I am HEAVY, you are leetle girly man who looked at Sasha. You weel die like your mother and father and gran and your ugly seester. Red Team will destroy Blu, we weel use thee Scout's bones as toothpicks. Ahahahhaha. Dat is why TF2 is best.
    Red Heavy

    4. Deus Ex
    Release: 2000
    Last year: 10
Deus Ex: JC Denton is gaming's own David Caruso; sunglasses indoors. At night. Yeah!
    Jonathan Bushell

Unbeaten and probably unbeatable for giving the player so many useful options with which to approach any given situation.
    Brulleks

The first game I remember giving me so much freedom. First play through don't kill the German, next play through kill the German and surprise! Different ending. That blew my mind.
    Ryan Qualls

I have never felt more immersed in a game's world - you really 'feel' the story. All the government conspiracies, technology - it had the greatest story I've ever seen. Playing a stealthy assassin was the most adrenalin pumping experience I've ever had in a game.
    Louis Gilletti

    3. Eve Online
    Release: 2003
    Last year: 2
This is the only sandbox game that matters. No story, no rules just a coherent universe and an eternal war that I am a small part of.
    Zone Ghost

EVE is a universe that is defined by the players. Its virtual-world-iness doesn't feel artificial, because NPCs and scripted events have very little to do with the experience.
    Mike Bare

Been playing EVE since 2005... it's the only MMO that I have ever stopped playing but never stopped subbing because your character continues to grow whether you play or not!
    Vincent Barnes

One server, full of danger everywhere you go. You can be blown up or ripped off in a shady transaction. The best part? It's encouraged by
    the developers.
    Dennis Rogers

    2. Fallout 3
    Release: 2008
    Last year: New entry
Finding every little precious gaming moment. If you didn't overturn every rock, you didn't know what you might be missing.
    Robert Chennault

    Must eat congressman's brain.
    Ossie Spears

Fallout 3 provided an experience that is so unique to the video game medium: I created my own experiences and stories.
    Michael Kenyon

It's like the Mad Max movies, without the vehicles.
    Matt Beggs

All the different ways you could go about each quest, all the ways you could build your character, and all the great mods for the game. Everything in this wonderful game just made me want more.
    Walker Summers

    1. Half-life 2
    Release: 2004
    Last year: 1
Where else can you be a PhD physicist and throw a grimy old toilet at pursuing alien cops?
    Mike Bare

In a word: pacing. Half-Life 2 showed that Valve w ere masters of pacing. They know how to feed you the storyline without letting you get too far from the action. They know just how long to stick you in the boat before you get tired of it and want to get back on foot. Everything about the game was just masterfully done.
    Walter Glenn

It has one of the most engaging, well told stories ever seen in a videogame. It's the epitome of proper pacing and level design. And Gordon Freeman sleeps with your mother.
    Christopher Michael Sharp

Gordon Freeman will kick your ass.... Best FPS of all time.
    Kinu Michael Grove

Two words: gravity gun. Do your Modern Warfares and Bad Companies allow you to throw toilets and bodies at other people? I DIDN'T THINK SO.
    Chris Knapik

Story line, characters, action, adventure, voice acting, and gravity guns are just so much damn fun.
    Michael Perry

I still remember that one tech-trailer in Ravenholm where Gordon uses that radiator for the first time... needless to say the game totally imploded then exploded my cranium all over the monitor screen and the surrounding bedroom when it finally came out.

Fallout 3 was awful. I tried to like it, I wanted to like it. It was just a horrible game. I'm glad to see that TF2 made #5 - but Modern Warfare 2 just behind it? lol? Rating MW2 behind MW1 is just damned silly.

    I can't believe FO3 scored so high.

Only two games pre-2000? Putting clones in there separately seems crazy too, i.e. KOTOR/Mass Effect and FO3/Oblivion. They must have a pretty young audience....

There's a lot missing from that list. And how did elderscrolls get beaten by modern warfare 2? elderscrolls oblivion is the single best RPG ever made, and modern warfare 2 is at best a mediocre FPS.

Yep. I can completely ignore this list. These are recent favourites; not games that have stood the test of time. How they can claim these are the "greatest PC games ever" with such a chronologically erroneous sampling pool is quite curious.
