yeah i wanted to re-order through scan because id caused them some hassle and with my other already paid for it was just a case of paying an extra 5 to match the price.quite a bargain id say.that one looked the best for the price range i was looking at.there were some more expensive ones but they didn't seem to offer much extra for the extra 20 or so.

thanks again though jameson, dont know where id be without this forum!!!

when im installing my new card i think this one will need an extra power source, where does this power source come from? does it plug back into the motherboard or does it need an external plug socket? sorry iv just never installed a gpu needing an extra power source before.

iv found out it actually uses a molex connector inside the computer but i cant see any spare ones inside of mine. so do they supply you with a breaker or some kind of connection so that it can run.i hope so otherwise im not sure what to do!!

the 8600 GTS uses a 6-pin PCI-e connector, they only come on new power supplies, but if you don't have one they normally come with a 2x 4 pin moxel adaptor to 6-pin PCI-e, but if you don't have any spare you may have an issue, are you sure you don't have any molex connetors spare?

i'll have a hunt in my huge crates of cables, maybe i have some moelx splitter cables i can send you, i can't recall any though, but i'll have a look. Let me know the outcome (if you need some).

*edit* i'm afraid i don't have any but you can buy some if you need: http://www.span.com/catalog/product_...roducts_id=973

They always say you shouldn't do this for supplying the power to a GPU, but the 8600 GTS isn't a power sucking monster, so i think it'll be aboslutely fine.

I checked the MSI website and i think it does supply a splitter with the proper power supply on the end.i dotn think they can expect everyone to have psu's with all these different connections. i thought this because on this site on the right hand side it shows product accessories (i know its the 8800 but they dont have the 8600gts listed yet) with the external power supply.i think i am saved.ill make it work even if its the death of me.

and jameson you were right my 450w psu will run it as thats what they reccomend for sli use of these cards so im well clear.

I just read your review on the 8600GT jameson which included the 7600gt too.....i like how after the first couple of benhmarks you just stopped using the 7600gt as i can imagine how awful it was compared.I think from them results (and my smallish 17" screen) the 8600gts will definetely outshine the 7900gs i was going to buy for pretty much the same price.

im just glad i run a small screen otherwise gaming starts getting expensive!!!!

lol, i didn't find it that bad, i actually had a deadline, so the 7600 GT results will be added tomorrow, they were not that important to the overall review, so a felt adding them later would have no impact

Hey i recieved my MSI 8600GTS OC and i must say its much better than my old card.playing fear now with everything maxed out (but turned off soft shadows) and did the test with stock and the lowest fps i get is 31!!! i do only have a small screen though.

also in the bundle i got company of heroes free! what a bonus as the game is still 15 online so im guessing it will be dearer in shops...and thankfully it plays that on max settings too.

overall thanks jameson as i dont think the 7900gs, even so overclocked, would have been able to handle the settings with these frame rates.

on a side note if anyones played battlefield 2 with an 8 series card do you get any problems with textures having like massive black artifacts on them? i only get it with this game and nothing else.

that certainly doesn't happen in 2142. do you have the latest game update and Nvidia driver? and did you fully uninstall the old driver (after uninstalling, go into safe mode and use driver cleaner, then reboot and install latest driver).

hmm, I'm guessing Nvidia isn't planning on making any of these as AGP 8x cards eh? Wish they would tho, it would save me a new mobo in the future....then again, i'll need a new proc by that time too.....

Hey jameson i was just wondering whether you could give me a little guidance on how to use the ati tool correctly for overclocking.from the stock clocks of my card iv managed this which gives my card a nice boost and is stable:

    • core clock= 690mhz-725mhz
    • mem clock=1050mhz-1076.15mhz
just wondered really whether im doing something wrong which is limiting how far i can push my card.

It starts to pick up alot of artifacts very very fast and the other day it made my general view go very artifacty (i know its not a word.lol) so i reduced it but when i try and find like the max memory using ati tool it normally makes the screen just go white and freeze so i reboot.maybe ive just got a very bad overclocker or could i possibly need to rma it altho it works perfectly well at stock, damn msi !!!!!
