Default Arctic Accelero Xtreme IV 280(X) GPU Cooler Review

Today's high demanding games can cause serious heat issues with improperly cooled graphic cards, so what do we do when they start to overheat? Look into water cooling? Not if your graphics card uses a non-referenced PCB. I'm in that boat; I picked up a few video cards without realizing they were non-referenced. The question is, what other options do we have in order to better cool the GPU and memory? Arctic has came up with a solution with the Accelero Xtreme IV 280(X), which is an upgraded air cooling solution that cools the GPU and memory utilizing 5 heatpipes and a custom rear heatsink.

Great review Joe. Arctic as always made good cooling solutions, but the "bad" thing is that all of Accelero Coolers are to bulky and almost always requires 3 slots.

I have been waiting for this review and I can't view it on my Android for some reason. I just returned two of these. I was back and forth wether or not I was going to install them but when I finally decided I was going to put them on the would not fit with my X58 classy board the huge heat sink was to close to the top pcie slot. 😢
The choice is clear I can quit
And fall on my sword or light a fire
To see who runs or stays
    And plays the confidence game

Hi guys, firstly, thanks for the review!

I'm interested in getting this cooler for my Sapphire R9 280. I'm just worried if it wouldn't fit due to RAM slot being too close?

    My mobo- GIGABYTE Z97X-SLI

    Graphic card: SAPPHIRE R9 280 3GB D5 DUAL-X OC

    Thanks peeps!

Thanks bro. I sure hope so.

But anyway, hopefully someone can shed some light on the cooler. I'm just worried about the backplate hitting the RAM or what not.

Good review Joe but I would have liked to see this coooler actually mounted on the MB in a case or on your test bench.
Seems like a waste of space for a 3 degree difference

The GB Z97 SLI board provides 1 PCIe 16x and 1 PCIE 8x slots for GPUs. The top slot is the 16x and most people want to use this slot no matter what. There is currently no card that can come close to saturating even PCIE 8x 3.0 so the must use 16x thinking is misplaced. Most of use already know this but do it anyways. Even I do it. Here is a quick article to back this up Impact of PCI-E Speed on Gaming Performance - Puget Custom Computers

The reason why I brought that up was your clearance question. My answer is, use the X8 slot and you do not have to worry about memory slot or CPU cooler Clearance. You will NOT lose any performance by using the 2nd PCIe slot.

The 3 degree difference is not why you would buy this cooler. 1. The Dual-X is an after market cooler. Those that have the AMD reference cooler would see a more dramatic difference in cooling potential. 2. This cooler would allow you to overclock your GPU more than the Dual-X cooler without increasing the fan noise. 3. It looks freaking cool as hell!

So grab the cooler, mount it and install in the 2nd PCIe 8x 3.0 slot and enjoy.

Guys...Just an update. I'm gonna case Corsair Carbide 400R as my casing. It's able to fit my GC + arctic Cooling if I do get it. Plus the case looks pretty sweet for my simple setup.

    Thanks peeps!
