This is a very good drive; based on the Lite-on but the ASUS engineers have always done a much better job at providing their own firmware to the unit along with some nice cosmetics.

Kind of like taking a stock Harley and rebuilding the motor and decking it out with a lot of chrome, in the end you have a much nicer build.

    Nice review KIPPER!
You know I am a speedster when it comes to optical drives.Should I pick this one up and will I be happy with it?

The review and the drives options kept me thinking of the old BenQ's and their Q Suite software?

The BenQ days are long gone as you know Joel

These new ASUS drives are just about as good as it gets right now. You will get good quality burns at 24X if you stick with TY media and OK burns with the Verbatim media that is offered right now.

I shipped the review sample off to another friend; missed the quality of the burns with it so I bought the same model with LightScribe from NewEgg for under 30.00 with shipping.

Every DVD drive I have tested consumes less than 1W in idle. What optical drives do is when a disc is inserted the drive consumes about 2.5W even without the drive spun up. The ASUS drive simply recognizes that the drive is not spun up and is idle so it adjusts the on board circuitry to bring the idle power down to the same level as if there was no disc installed. While I applaud ASUS for doing this you can get the same power savings by not leaving discs in your drive when you are not going to use the disc.
