Hi everyone. Last night i was just relaxing and watching videos on youtube. Then i began to hear clicking noises from my PC. It wasn't coming out of the speakers or the fan. Im pretty sure it was the CPU. During the clicking process my computer just freezes up and i cant move anything, only the mouse was working. When it was "clicking" my speed fan reads 60-62 C for the CPU. After this it began to cool down and the clicking started again. WHen the clicking process was done i began to hear laser beam noises from the CPU. During this process everything works find, i just get lag spikes. The laser beam thing happens at 55-59 C. This was not the first time that it happened to me. The other times I just reset my PC and everything was back to normal. THis time after the reset, it wasnt normal. The clicking and laser beams came back. Afterwards i just shut off my pc and went to bed. Today.. after i got back home which is about now. I turned on my usual, speed fan, aim, mozilla, and winamp. Everything works fine but the weird thing is... the music lags while at 49C. 49 C for me is pretty normal. I tried to use the headphones to see if it was the speaker's fault, but it wasnt. THe music lag is worst when i open up programs or another tab/page on mozilla or even my computer. My setup is: 3.2 GHZ Pentium 4 Hyper Threading 2 GB of Ram Internal Local C 230 GB Internal V Drive 300 GB ATI Radeon x800xl I have an HP chipset since i bought everything as a whole in 8th grade. Expect for the 1gb ram addon, V drive, and video card. I always had my tower side open. I dont know if this is the problem. My computer only has 2 fans. A 90mm on the CPU and a 90 MM exhaust. Here are some pictures. I hope someone can help me out before I go to Fry's electronics and get a CPU or tower. Thank You! ![]() ![]() |

that sounds a lot like the warning signs of a dying hard drive to me. Can you explain the clicking noise in more details? Is it like some clunking noise in succession?
99% sure it's hard drive, nothing else really ticks in a pc like what you described, and certainly the most common cause is a HDD on it's last leg. |

But if you get a different drive, and set up windows on it, you can possibly get the important information before it dies on the other drive |

Do you personally think i should get a new drive and install windows on it? Or is there a method you know of that can save my C drive. Waiit a minute... why is my C drive dying out? I never knew that it is possible for a HD to die out.
I only use my C drive for games and music. Storage such as movies etc goes into the V drive. The V drive has only 20 gb left on the other hand the C drive has over a hundred left. How could the C drive be on its last leg? Last edited by vince1234; 21-06-2008 at 23:47. |

hard drive failure is like AIDS....once it starts its all over... i would "recommend" getting a different drive and backing up the most important files first, trying not to use the Dieing drive as must as possible. |

Just use an external hard drive for now to copy all your important files over and hope the dying hard drive lasts long enough to complete the process. Once youve installed windows on a new hard drive then your can copy your files back if you need to.

copy it as soon as you can. i think my C: is on the way out, so iv just backed up onto my D:
HDDs have moving parts, so like all moving things they wear down and die. this is one the main arguements for SSDs.

WOW! He can here laser beams, omg... *Joking aside*
Well I misinterpreted Laser Beams as Sparks / Flashes inside his case, I thought jeez his comp must be bad for it to do that. But oh well glad to see you've fixed your issue. My light saber skills are unmatched in all the universe *insert evil laugh* OH OW OW OW OW *Insert screams of agonising pain* |
