So I recently acquired this processor, AMD Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition base 2.5 GHz. Now seeing this has an unlocked multiplier i tweaked a bit with AMD Overdrive and I have a small question. I left the voltage at standard to see how far it would go, and I hit 2.7 GHz stable at the default voltage. @ 2.8 GHz I did a voltage jump to 1.30V, this setting also allowed me to boot at 2.9 GHz. Unfortunately from there on Prime95 was displaying errors. Increasing and decreasing the voltages did not help. The temp at that point rose over 60 Degrees C so I stopped. Now my question is , what cooler should I be using to have it at a maximum of 50-51 Degrees C at 2.9 GHz? |

when you are overclocking make sure your processor is not linked with your ram, because when your overclocking your processor you will be overclocking the ram as well. and that will cause instability or won't boot at all.
if it is linked, put it in unlinked mode so it only overclocks your processor. heat sinks: Good and cheap http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835185125 cheap, good, and bulky http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835101014 just two to take a look at. also make sure there room in your case if your going to get an aftermarket heatsink |

Unlink your processor and RAM, do you mean detach it off the motherboard?

No that does not mean to take them off the motherboard. It is a setting in the Bios. the 3 settings are Linked, Unlinked, and Auto. In linked mode it will as one goes up so will another. Hence if you up the Processor speed the Ram will equivalently go up.
So its best when overclocking to have them in unlinked mode. |

I'll try and find it. I got myself a new motherboard yesterday with an AM2+ socket this time so as soon as re-fit them together I'll try and find that setting in bios.

I recently purchased a Dell XPS 625 from Dell. Please review specs before helping out.
I am interested in overclocking my processor to a safe, but, enjoyable level. I have read many forums and reviews, a lot of similar results seem to be reached using different settings. I have a lot of information and suggestions I need help consolidating. Hence, I am posting here for help. From what I have read, the Overdrive soft ware is nice, but has the potential to cause problems. Majority says to just do it in BIOS. I am willing to overclock in BIOS, but, since this is my first time, I want to get the method eaxctly right before I do it. Heres what I knoe so far.
I appreciate all your help and suggestions. Please feel free to ask questions. I will respond and provide info the best I can. |
