I'm not a big Nvidia guy so I'll let others comment on overclocking the GPU. Shouldn't need to overclock the CPU though. The i7 with 8GB of RAM is more than sufficient for Skyrim. The lag is from your GPU. Overclocking it probably won't help. The graphics card only has 1GB of VRAM and low clock speeds. Upgrade your GPU and it will seem like you got a whole new system. Let us know what kind of budget you have for a new GPU and we can make some suggestions.

Download MSI Afterburner here: MSI Afterburner

It is a simple utility that lets you bump up gpu voltage, core clock, and memory clock. It also monitors gpu temperature. You should be able to get a little extra from your card with this.

Make small bumps in your speeds, watch your gpu temperature, and test the card for stability and artifacts before bumping the settings up again. You can try a small bump to the voltage (to the first increment, it goes up in increments unlike the speeds). Depending on your setup, your cooling may or may not be sufficient for a small voltage bump. Again, watch your temps. Search for gtx555 overclocking threads; see what other people are running theirs at with what voltages and what cooling.

What mobo do you have? My Asus has settings that let the mobo/bios dynamically adjust cpu speed depending on cpu load, so it will automatically overclock under load within specific temperature parameters.

Your cpu is a 2600 not a 2600K and as such I would expect that you would get a maximum of 3.6. I am not sure whether or not bclock is at all adjustable but if so then you may get another .05 or so...that amount is so small that you will be unlikely to notice the effect.

Gpu overclocking can be a trial and error thing. Increase your graphics clock, memory clock, and shader clock individually a little bit at the time. After each increase run your game to test it. If you start to see white flashes and artifacts that means you have gone a little too far.

There are GPU tests that you can run instead of your game if you wish (3dMark and uniengine or furmark come to mind) but the game itself is what you are aiming to have a better experience with so maybe it is best to stick with that

You may find that you fail before you get to this but the sort of area to be aiming for is in the regions of 875 core clock, 1990 mem clock, and 1780 shader clock.

Fill in your rig specs before you start so that we can see if you may have any potential issues.

I second that info. MSI Afterburner is a great program. As was stated, a CPU overclock won't make that big a difference.. as for the GPU, overclocking it will probably make the biggest overall difference.
