    Default 290x black screen?

This is a problem that usually only happens once a day, but super annoying. I did google the problem and found alot of people sayings its a heat problem. But this happens even at stock clocks so im not sure?
Basically my problem is every once in a while playing games. My screen just goes black. I can still hear sound and what not. But it acts as if the card just shuts off and wont come back on until i restart the PC. I have the card running at stock clocks so im not really sure heat is the issue here? i know these cards run hot but i shouldn't be overheating at stock clocks! i just upgraded to a SSD so im running a fresh install of win7 and all drivers so that eliminates that problem! can anyone else confirm these could be a heat issue so i dont waste my money on a aftermarket cooler?

Btw this is a reference card

A heat issue seems a pretty logical conclusion given the demonstrated behavior.

Seems like it is getting too hot and going into some sort of protection mode. What you might want to do is install a thermal monitoring application and then play a game with the thermal monitor running. That should give you some indicator of the temps on the GPU when it shuts down. I suggest GPU-Z with the "Log to File" checkbox clicked. Then if it crashes, you can look at the log file to see what the temps were. With that knowledge, you could certainly find out for sure whether the GPU was hitting it's temp threshold. If not, then there is some other fault, and it might be time to RMA it. The card is rated to run @95C @100% load, stock clocks.

Booting in quiet mode limits the fans to 40% speed. According to what I've read, there's a switch that you can flick to change the fans to Uber mode (55%). Verifying you're in Uber might be a good first step.

fans are in uber mode now, and also under CCC it is moved up to allow fans to go to 100% if needed but they never do. I had no idea you could log with GPUz and i will deff do that and see whats going on with temps!

That's an interesting bit of info. The fans never ramp up? Hmmmm. That's kind of ominous. My initial thoughts on that are that it means the temps are staying in line, and something else is broke, or that the temps are going wacky and the card is not responding to it. Not good either way.

Let us know what's going on with the temps, that'll be the key factor in helping isolate the problem I think.

Was having the same issue with the 290s but only with water blocks on. mine issue was not a heat related issue. doubt your issue is either, for sure not the actual cores. If anything it would be the VRMs or memory as GPU core temps never goes out of whack. Make sure CCC is set to auto everything. If the fan speeds still do not act right install Sapphire Trix, MSI Afterburner or something like this to adjust and monitor temps.

Just because you are running the newest driver does not mean it is not the driver. There has been a lot of reported bugs with the Omega driver. I have completely removed it and went back to 14.9. You can try a couple things to isolate the issue.

Have you performed all of the Windows 7 Updates? Service Pack and the million that follow? There are a lot updates that will effect Gaming and GPU support but doesn't explicitly list them as so.

The main culprit IMHO will be the Catalyst Control Center. This was the source of my woes. To test if it your issue as well you can use MSCONFIG to prevent it from starting on boot. or you can Use ATIMAN to scrub the system of all AMD drivers and only reinstall the GPU drivers WITHOUT CCC and any other software. Play around, game see what happens. if it doesn't crash you know what it is. I am willing to bet $5 that CCC is crashing because of some internal conflict.

Option 2, Driver scrub using ATIMAN install 14.9 or older. See what happens. Can also move back to 14.4 or but I doubt going back any further will be helpful.

if you still think it is heat related place a 120mm or 140mm fan directly on the GPU. Place it so the air will flow between the cooler shroud and PCB so there is a little more cooling on the VRMs and DRAM. If it doesnt crash or reduces the frequency of the crashes I would guess there is an issue with thermal pads/paste or not being fastened correctly. How old are is your GPU?

Just curious, what the hell is CCC doing that would cause a black screen? Even if it crashes, shouldn't driver be independent of the control center???

    Windows. Meh.

If we knew exactly wth it is doing we would be able to fix it. This is the most common BSOD with CCC but Black screen is another. If he checks his log I am pretty sure he will see the CCC crashes. Download BlueScreenView to check the minidump files.

    Default Re: 290x black screen?

I have had my shares of AMD driver failures.. With the amount of AMD cards I have used in the last couple of years, I have pretty much narrowed it down to mostly the drivers in CCC or other related driver issues with AMD. What AMD has done is integrated majority if its "shared" DLL files within the drivers to work with each other in CCC. This is why when CCC stops working, something else within that "shared" folder or files will go out of whack since the files are no longer responding.

In regards to the latest Omega drives, I believe its 14.12 or something have been the worst drivers I have used. With my Intel system housing 2x 290s, they constantly BSOD even at boot up. Pretty much the moment windows is trying to load CCC, it fails to initialize and stops responding. I have already confirmed this with my BSOD mini dump files. For some reason... the system just doesn't like that set of drivers, and yes, this is even with a clean install. (already did my trial and errors) to narrowed out the problem.

With that same system, right now the most stable drivers I have been using is 14.9 for the R9 290s in crossfire. System has been stable for quite sometime now even running all my games and benchmarks. However, my cards also have water blocks installed so that is something to consider. But even on my other system that has a air cooled sapphire R9 290, this has been the same case as well... However, my fans ramp up during full load. Card can hit about 85c under full stress test on air, under water my 290s stay under 55c even after 4-5 hrs of gaming with BF4.

Now.... I also have quite a few 280x, this has been a little different. While the 14.9 drivers work, however once my 280x are in crossfire, I run into issues on occasion where CCC stops responding. It doesn't happen often, but it does... With the newest 14.12 drivers. My 280x has thus far been stable, I did get a blue screen once related to CCC, but the reason was that CCC stopped responding. At least thats what it looks like on my mini dump files.

Going back to the original topic, my 290s also had the black screen flash (on and off) once in a while with some of the unstable drivers. It seems to happen when the drivers stop responding. More specifically, ONLY the video drivers but CCC was still functioning which still operates the sound drivers. Then I have to reboot and the video is back. But its been quite some time since that has happened and also on different drivers that I am using now. Of the 6x 290s I have owned, I had to RMA one due to a dead HDMI port. Of the 14x 280x I have owned... 5 have gone back for RMA and ALL of them were XFX models.

well, i logged my temps, and found out im crashing, most likely because my temps are hitting 98c on a stock NON overclocked 290x -_-, i really got a dud of a card unless this is a driver issue, ive tried overclocking the card before and i cant even hit 1100mhz on the core before i get anomaly's, I guess its time to revert back drivers. and if that dosent solve it. Either RMA or buy a new card

98c! Ouch! That's way tooooo Hot.. Mine don't pass 85c at all.
I say you should RMA it already.

The refs coolers do a REALLY bad job at keeping the cards cool.
Even the XFX 290s I have don't do that well. Which is why I ended up water blocking them.

The Sapphire Toxic model air coolers do a much better job.

well. I guess i just found a way of tricking the fans in CCC, I noticed at the bottom there is a "target GPU Temp" if i lowered this from 95c to 80c the fans would kick up but it would throttle the card.
I then raised the power limit settings tos 50% to stop the throttling, And now the fans are running ~65% and its keeping the GPU at 80c

Well that works. Since it's a reference card, it might be worth investing in an aftermarket cooling solution for it, or save your pennies and add it to that kick ass loop you're running.

Not the best solution but it is better than nothing. 98c? wth. I would set CCC to defaults and use something like Trix or Afterburner. They have better options for managing temps and power. You may actually get an overclock accomplished.

Yea, I would use sapphire trixx to make some adjustments even further than ccc.
Ccc is ok for a temporary fix, but I think you need to find something a little more long term.

Since you have a ref design card and you are water cooling already, looking into a water block may be beneficial.

And since there is a loop with plenty of capability already in the build....adding the component that needs the water cooling more than anything else certainly makes sense.
