It's hard to say since no one has had the huevos to compare it apples to apples to a 970....because, you know, doing that would mean that AMD won't give you samples anymore.

So, the 7950, erm, I mean "390" totally gassed at maximum OC essentially keeps up with a GTX 970 with a factory OC. We are supposed to pretend that the 970 doesn't have insane amounts of headroom and that using it won't put it leaps ahead of the 390...while running cooler....and consuming less power.....and having better drivers and controls....etc.....etc.....etc.....

But AMD fans will talk about the 4K resolution that 99% of them will never game at, and the extra VRAM that they will never use.....

The good news about the 390 however, is you can usually get a much larger Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale on it than you can a 970. Sometimes that price difference makes it worth it. I ended up with Sapphire R9 290s with the Vapor-x cooler at $260 each a year ago because of it. Otherwise, Nvidia is just the Performance king right now.

I'd think it would need to be a pretty bang up deal on that R9 this year. Just a couple of weeks ago, I picked up an EVGA GeForce GTX 970 04G-P4-2974-KR 4GB SC GAMING w/ACX 2.0 for $289.00 & This week the EVGA GeForce GTX 970 04G-P4-2975-KR 4GB SC GAMING w/ACX 2.0+ is the same price EVGA GeForce GTX 970 04G-P4-3975-KR 4GB SSC GAMING w/ACX 2.0+, Whisper Silent Cooling Graphics Card - Newegg.com (which is the one I WISH I had waited for, as it has 3 x DP outputs). I'd be hard pressed to pay only $30 less for a R9-290 when I factor in the heat and current differences...(not to mention the aforementioned headroom!).

Yeah, and it was last year, AND it's a 290 instead of a 390, which is not as good at power and efficiency optimizations. Unless you can get a $200 390, you'll probably wanna go the 970 route.

I got four 290X cards for 200 apiece and I'm happy with them. (two apiece in crossfire, in two systems)
    I also got a GTX-980 WindForce for 200 and I have a 980Ti SuperClocked on the way too. (375)

The cooling and airflow in my cases compensate for the heat from the 290Xs. Crossfire performance is plenty good enough for now.
And all I plan for the 980s is an SLI setup until I can get more of both.

Prices are coming down a lot on parts. SSDs are a great example.

    It's all good.

I gotta say, between Crossfire and the new Crimson driver, seems like a good time to have AMD. I really like my crossfire setup and I'm looking forward to benching out the Crimson driver this weekend with some Nvidia favorite titles; Hots, Lol, WoW, Borderlands, and Tomb Raider just to have at least one good AMD title in there.

Before this, I was on 3GB R9-280X OC cards. They were pretty good performers too. I got better scores with them than my SLI GTX-680s.

It's a lot better these days with the better cards.

I think the R9 390 cards are a good deal at what ever you pay. Price is a lot better than the 980Ti. for sure. We will need to see a few more reviews on the R9 390 before we are sure on just how good a card it is.

I haven't seen a 390 yet that could keep up with my 970. But the 8GB 290X my buddy has is beating it pretty solidly in all the benchmarks. We're both using custom bios versions and water cooling. If I were to buy a GPU today, I would seriously consider the 8GB 290X, but not the 390.

I'm currently using (2) HD7850 cards in Crossfire.
    They kind of suck.
I think for Xmas I'll be looking at the one's described above... replacing both for one card. Figure I'll spend about $500...

Even though i have a full AMD system, i'll likely go with an nVidia card..
