    Default Another Newbie

    Hi Guys,

I'm Shane, from Australia, I'm getting on a bit (45!) I've been working in IT for 25 years, and built my first pc in the early nineties, but haven't built one for a few years.

What that means is I have no idea about modern hardware, so I'm going to be asking a million questions

    So far I've picked up the following;

Thermaltake level 10 battle edition case.
    Thermaltake water 2.0 extreme cooler.
    Pioneer Blu Ray writer
    Thermaltake Card reader.

I'm looking at completing the puzzle with
    ASUS RampageIV Extreme mobo
    An I7 3930k
    4 x Kingston predator 8Gb pc2133 ddr3 ram
    Thermaltake toughpower grand 1050w PSU
2 x 256 GB SSD's in raid 0 (or 512GB SSD's if the budget can stretch or I can be patient)

I'm still deciding on a video setup, but it'll be nvidia and a 27 inch lcd. I'm leaning towards running windows 7 64bit pro.

    Hi Criss_glitch 666

I was looking at a pair of 660's, but on advice from the forum I'll go for one a ASUS GTX680 GTX680-DC2-4GD5 DIRECT CU II 4GB GDDR5 2xDVI/HDMI/DP Clock 1058MHz.

I'm trying to stick as much as possible to "same brands" so a lot of ASUS and Thermaltake gear.

    Welcome!

Rampage IV Ext is a good board but if you are not going to do any extreme overclocking then you don't have to get this board. And if you're planning to do extreme overclocking the 3930k with the Thermaltake 2.0 extreme cooler then forget about it. You need serious water cooling setup.

The board is quad-channel; so to run quad channel you need 8x DIMMs of RAM. You're short of 4 modules, you're still can run 4 modules but you're only utilize dual-channel.

SSD RAID is still a headache with TRIM so stick with one fastest/biggest SSD you can afford.

Since you're only using one 27" monitor then stick with one single fastest GPU.

    Thanks Deton,

This is why I've joined the forum, to suck the knowledge from you guys

Plan a is to start with 32 gig, and upgrade to 64 asap, so that will solve the DIMM issue. (Another option is 32 Gig, all 4 Gig DIMMS)

I'm not planning on doing any overclocking for a while, I have a lot to learn about liquid cooling before I go crazy!

Yes, you still can run 32GB at dual mode. IMO, it's more sense to use quad channel right away, this is a reason you go with the 2011 platform in the first place or you have pick Z77 or sooner Z88 boards.

Water 2.0 Ext can handle mild overclock, it will be ok anything under 4.5Ghz.

BTW, don't get any RAM is faster than 2400MHz for the X79 boards, because it is the fastest Mhz its can support, some of the boards can't even support that high of frequency.

Just priced 8 4 Gb PC2400 DIMMS, its very do-able, and to be honest I can't see myself needing 64 Gig.

I'll go with a 512Gb SSD, might end up with a couple of 1 TB 10k RPM SATA drives, but thats down the track.

I went CPU first, MoBo second, so I hope I've made a slightly future proof choice.

what's your intend to use this new rig, gaming or multi media machine?

Intel soon releasing the Z8x chipset and Hasswell in June. You should wait a little bit until then before you pull the trigger on the build.

Gaming mainly, but with a bit of CAD work as well.

As for holding off, I'm buying bits and bobs at the moment (Monitor next) and leaving the important stuff like motherboard and cpu until last, so I have wriggle room if I change my mind.

If that's a case then leave MOBO, CPU & RAM for the last minutes.

Regarding to the memory, 64Gb is overkill for most average users and gamer, however, it's definitely benefit with AutoCAD. You can convert some of the memory into RAM Disk and install your favorite games or CAD program on the RAM Disk, seat back and see it flies. BTW, you don't have to install all 64GB of memory. You can get two identical sets of 16GB (4x4G, this will give you total of 32GB of 8 modules of 4GB per DIMM. If you don't think you will ever use all the 64GB. This way will let you utilize the quad-channel right away.

    Thanks Deton,

I'm convinced that I'll go the 8 x 4 Gb option, it's more than enough for what I do, and I can get faster RAM by going smaller

My next decision is a monitor, so I have a bit of research to do there.

Welcome to Pure OC ! In regards to the Rampage 4 Extreme, take a look at the ASRock X79 Extreme 9, it's close to $100 cheaper, and a great board. I'm currently running one with with a Kingston HyperX Beast 64GB 2133MHz kit, a 3930K at 4.5GHz, 460GB SSD and using custom water cooling. Also running two EVGA GTX690s, and to be honest with you it's a really great board. I also had the Rampage 4 Extreme with a 3960X but ended up seling it, so I can tell you that the Extreme 9 overclocks just as well as the R4E did, but at a cheaper price.
