Default Q6600 Giveaway for World Community Grid team PureOverclock

The PureOverclock World Community Grid crunching team has 3 members!! We are off to a great start but need more members so we can flip those work-units and climb the team charts!

WCG crunching works on numerous research questions with the goals of curing cancer, understanding human proteins, developing clean energy, curing aids, curing muscular dystrophy, promoting clean water, curing malaria, etc. etc. Through wcg crunching, your cpu cycles are contributing directly to solving some of humanity's biggest problems and making our world a better place.

The next person who joins team PureOverclock WCG AND posts in this thread that they Want A Quad will receive
a free Q6600 (SLACR), Abit IP35 (non-Pro), and 2 GB DDR2. I'm pretty sure I also have a basic video card that I will include.
This is a working rig, one of my own crunchers. One core = one work-unit at a time, so a quad can crunch 4 work-units at a time.
This is still a viable chip for WCG crunching, and it is overclockable.

Here is a brief overview of the current research projects. More complete descriptions can be found at the WCG home page: World Community Grid - Home
The WCG setup guide is here: http://forums.pureoverclock.com/fold...k-through.html

So this is like folding@home? I am definitely in! A quad would be nice! Especially for the secondary rig I wanted set up! xD

It is like F@H in that it is a distributed computing application (something your cpu/gpu runs to do various calculations)(client app connects with server to update/download/upload...). It shares some of the same goals (human protein folding) and has a number of different goals (clean energy, clean water, cure cancer, cure malaria, etc.). Individuals and teams accumulate stats, rank, prestige, etc. We can run contests with other teams & among team members, talk smack, trade hardware, obsess on points output, energy consumption, overclock and heat management, post farm pics, take threads off-topic, make friends, and have fun.

    I should mention that the Q6600 includes a heatsink/fan.

Sounds good! How often does it update your stats? Whether or not it includes a heatsink I'd be set! XD

With your x980 (6 cores + HT) you could run 12 work-units at a time. Even if you ran it 4 hours a day (automated via the client settings) your output would be a significant contribution to the team total. As long as your cooling is sufficient for the load you will have no problems. But I certainly understand your concern. The best bang for your buck these days looks to be the 2500k/2600k, considering price, electric consumption, overclockability, and points per day. I usually run my 2600k at 4.3GHZ 24/7 (water-cooled). I'm on vacation now, so I turned it off before I left. It really cranks out the work-units.

Well then, I think it's time for me to enable Hyper Threading!

Perhaps I could get a little help here. When I try to add a new project, I enter the email and password I signed up with and receive a message saying "Login Failed. Check the email address and password, and try again."

You are having login problems when you try to enter your name and password in the WCG home page, or when you try to attach to a new project in the BOINC client?

Without knowing more I would try the heavy-handed approach: unistall the program, run CC Cleaner to clear any wcg registry entries, & re-install.
